Damn near used an entire role of film shooting @sweetpilll at @theums and I’m not mad about it. It was a beautiful experience feeling immediate affection for and inspiration from a band like this.

The waist beads I’ve been wearing for about two years finally broke this weekend. When I got them, I was told the color I chose meant I was sleeping on my own potential. That vendor read the shit outta me. Having those beads break in this season of creative bursts and connection feels incredibly poetic. I know growth and creativity comes and goes in seasons. Today, I am grateful.

For the first time ever, you can purchase up prints by me (like these!) featuring poetry by @howellandheal in celebration of the release of their beautiful book of poetry ā€œburning, breaking, buildingā€ from @southbroadwaypress on April 23 @strawberry.mountain.bst šŸ“

Proceeds from print sales will be donated to Colorado Immigrant Justice Fund šŸ«¶šŸ½ by @marissammorrow

I feel honored to be connected with so many creatives in this little life of mine; people who feel the call deep in their bones to tell stories, give a voice to their community, connect with fellow humans through their art.

@c.e.yo is one of those amazing, creative humans. After interviewing her for a faculty position at my job, I immediately knew she was a ray of light and creativity that could inspire and encourage other storytellers. When we had a whole outdoor portrait session planned to celebrate her forthcoming book (keep an eye out!), but needed to pivot last minute—literally like within an hour of our scheduled time—because of possible rain, of course Charity had the brilliant idea to reach out to Kachine, the owner of @good.practice.denver, to see if she’d be down to let us use her space for a session. And of course Kachine was incredibly gracious and supportive of this idea, even coming back to re-open the space for us to use. This was also right after I had just learned about Good Practice when I heard about a Lord of the Rings event they were hosting that I wanted to go to.

I guess this is all just to say: the world is dark and heavy, but it’s also full of beautiful little synchronicities and inspiring human beings. This is the stuff that keeps me going. I hope you can find your own version to carry you through the chaos.

And if you’re a creative (writer, photographer, musician, band, visual artist, etc.), let me take your portrait. I promise it’ll be magic ✨ by @marissammorrow

Been slacking on sharing some recent work so I thought I’d start with some moments from a recent local show with @transmutation_band and @loslolosrock.

The past few months I’ve been reminded how much live music nourishes my soul. Whether it’s a local show at a small venue like this, or a bigger band somewhere like the Boulder Theater or the O. Seeing artists share their art and passion with a crowd is something that will never not bring a smile to my face. And concert photography was one of the first things that just felt like ā€œmeā€ in my early adulthood years. Even before I had a camera in my hands, I was going to shows and freezing specific moments that happened before, during, and after a show. Do I go on tour with bands or work big shows for local media outlets? Not yet. Do I want to? I’m not sure. What I do know is that I love documenting moments of music and the people who love it. by @marissammorrow

Two things that have really nourished my photography this year:

- reading ā€œThe Women Who Changed Photographyā€ by @gemmapadley
- last light photowalks; took these photos this past Saturday during our most recent walk [dm me if you want to join where we’re walking next. even if you simply use your phone or a tiny $5 digital camera, you are welcome to walk and just notice with us].

Sometimes you just need a bit of tinder to that keep that spark going, even when everything else around you feels heavy and dark. by @marissammorrow

Oh hey! Photos that reflect my actual hair length šŸ˜‚ Grateful to two badass creatives here in Denver without whom my long overdue author photos would not have been possible!

The talent that is @marissammorrow—for her grace and care in scheduling (then rescheduling, due to kids/life!) and pivoting locales at the eleventh hour in order to make this life-giving shoot happen. I mean, REALLY. Marissa is such a beautiful soul, fellow writer, and all around delightful connector & community builder. If you need, like me, to refresh your author photos or are looking for an incredible local event photographer, reach out to Marissa!

And also, SO MANY THANKS to sweet Kachine who owns @good.practice.denver, the cutest art cafe in town. I first met Kachine when my dear mama friend and I stopped into Good Practice for a collage session on Mothers Day earlier this year and it was such a gift ā¤ļø When I called her to ask if she would be open to lending us her space… an hour before our shoot… while the cafe was closed to the public… she was so generous to agree to meet us for our impromptu, intimate session. And such a warm, vibrant place for taking headshots! I hear she may be opening up the space for future portrait sessions šŸ˜ and also her creative programming is šŸ’Æ

Now I’m inspired to write words worthy of these gorgeous photos… by @marissammorrow

I’m convinced that taking photos in Edinburgh last year with my best friend @agmorrow is a big reason why I’ve ended up taking more photos this year overall. Sometimes you just need a little bit of magic—whether that’s a trip, or a gig, or discovering the work of other artists—to reignite that spark that’s always inside of you. In some seasons that spark feels non-existent. In others it might be a full on fire. It’s okay to know both and hold on to what you love about your passions. I know I need this reminder daily. by @marissammorrow

When I started photography 10 years ago, I remember hearing other photographers say ā€œyou should always have a camera on you whenever you’re out and aboutā€. Logically I understood why they would say that; have a camera on you at all times, take more pictures, become a better photographer. But for the longest time I resisted it because it made me self conscious and most of the time I was (and still can be) too afraid to take candid shots of the world around me because I was afraid of getting yelled at—one time I did get yelled at while at a record store in Denver and that shit slightly scarred my little creative heart, but I’m getting more resilient!

Whipping out a DSLR on the light rail or walking down Colfax can still feel intimidating and attention grabbing, so at the beginning of this year I purchased my Olympus Pen EP-5. This little guy has stayed in my Baggu since then and honestly, this is the most I’ve ever casually taken photos since starting my photography journey. It’s not about getting the perfect shot every time. It’s about slowing down, noticing, and being more intentional about telling a story through my shots.

So in honor of this powerful little digital camera (and yesterday being World Photography Day…oops I missed it), here’s a series of simple shots I’ve taken on my Olympus this year. It’s a simple little change of routine, habit, and gear that has made a huge difference in how I see and capture my world. by @marissammorrow

I’ve been thinking a lot about ā€œthe pointā€ behind my art. Why am I writing the poems I’m writing? Why am I taking the photos I’m taking? Most of the time it just comes down to: because I want to. because I love it. And I think it’s important to have those two things as a foundation. As I continue to nourish my creativity this year though, I want to challenge myself to create a cohesive body of work. Poems and photos that stick to the ribs of the soul, giving life to those who consume them. Telling stories and revealing truths for those who need them. For now, I’ll keep taking photos of old cars and houses, graffiti, and stickers on Denver’s streets; capturing the beauty of this complicated world in the ways I see it through my lens, through my words. Just know that there’s something evolving inside of my soul and I’m giving it the time and intentionality it needs to eventually poke its head out and greet the sun. by @marissammorrow
