Contemporary Impressionist Featuring Figures, Still Lifes, Landscapes, and other Loves

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

I’ve not found time to paint recently, so I thought I’d share an idea for you if you do find time, or to try after the Holiday Season is past. Try painting in values only. I explain a bit further in this time lapse. I wish you all much happiness during this festive season, and of course in 2025 as well! #paintingpractice #marjorieshicks #figurepainting #portraitart #creativeportraiture #boldbrush #contemporaryimpressionist #oilpainters #americanimpressionistsociety #oilpaintersoninstagram #oilpaintersofamerica by @marjorieshicks

First “from life” portrait of a child, age 7! Our granddaughter, Alpine. You all may wonder why I’m painting so many tonal head studies- it’s simply to practice getting off to a good start. The quicker I can get to something that resembles my model, the better chance I have of being pleased with my work by the end of a session painting with friends. Im giving myself the gift of practice. I learn something every single time. 🥳. A special thank you to @clague_fine_art for the tip to set up an iPad for my model to watch a favorite show! #paintingpractice #oilpaintersofamerica #americanimpressionistsociety #marjorieshicks #contemporaryimpressionist by @marjorieshicks

Here’s a very different approach for me. (I’m sneaking in a post before I need to start cutting up this fruit for Christmas morning!) Ok, why not try letting the painting tell you what it needs? Swipe right to see how I proceeded through my composition..
- I began with my main object - then explained a bit more with color and value. - I then felt like the painting needed something blue! - explained more of the cup and saucer. - then I thought the painting might need something more linear? Like some spoons placed thoughtfully to lead the eye around the canvas.. I’ve still more work to do on my plate, but if the painting is telling YOU it needs something, do tell! I’d be interested to hear your thoughts. Merry, Merry Christmas, and Happy Holidays to you all! 🎄🍊😘 by @marjorieshicks
