We all have those things that we regret doing that keep us awake late at night. It’s just a failing of mine. I try to do it right, but I just can’t. I swear. by @mark_d_kennedy

The witch’s familiar steals her broom for a joyride…and on Halloween! He’s going to be in so much trouble. That’s it for Inktober! Have a safe and Happy Halloween. Okay, during Inktober I’ve exhorted you to do two things: vote and read! Just another plea to pick up a book. Inspired by the work of Bill Peet, patron saint of storyboard artist and children’s book author. Derrick was hit with the sudden realization that his lifelong commitment to gathering wealth was completely wasted, because, as a dragon, he had way to interact with the human economy. Part Three! Yeah that’s right I was born in August and I’m bitter about my sign. No interesting or exciting animal to represent us, just…you know. It’s boring! Unfair! We should all get something cool as a sign. And that’s why I say astrology is nonsense! Part Two! More pondering about what sign our little (hypothetical) baby might be. I’m not actually expecting. Some zodiac signs are pretty cool. Like Sagittarius. People with that sign won’t let you forget it, like, we get it, YOUR SYMBOL IS A CENTAUR SHOOTING AN ARROW, YOU’RE COOL! STOP MAKING YOUR ASTROLOGICAL SIGN YOUR WHOLE PERSONALITY, JERRY! Anyway, come back tomorrow for the thrilling conclusion. Part One: what Zodiac sign will our little baby be? I’m not good at drawing babies or cool looking things so I tried to challenge myself. Also I hate astrology. It annoys me and I’ve had women on dating apps reject me because they claim our signs aren’t “compatible.” Although that may have been just an excuse because it’s easier than saying, “you have a bad personality.” Drawn with a Sailor fude fountain pen on animation paper #Inktober #baby #zodiacsign #astrology #cancer #taurus #drawing #sketch #comic by @mark_d_kennedy

Returning to the animal college idea…my Father used to tell a story of his times at Cornell and a math professor who had such bad eyesight that he would erase equations with his nose as he wrote them on the chalkboard. An old tortoise professor seemed like a likely suspect for this type of behavior. The phases of Inktober from excitement to regret to self-loathing and eventually…well, it’s hard to say, it ain’t over yet. Somebody remind me to never do this again. Or at least don’t do multiple drawings for every day. Drawn with a Sailor fude fountain pen on animation paper #Inktober #drawing #sketch #artist #fountainpendrawing by @mark_d_kennedy

Recent news about the rising illiteracy levels in the U.S. are alarming to me. I grew up as a voracious reader (there wasn’t much else to do back then lol) and I gave up reading for a time myself during the pandemic. Lately I’ve made a concerted effort to read more and I find it very rewarding. No matter what topic you’re interested in, there’s a book to pique your interest. It’s hard to explain what makes reading so important. There’s something about experiencing the world through someone else’s eyes and their viewpoint becoming concrete through language that is calming and stimulating at the same time and reallly helps sharpen your brain.
