FIELD is now open at Arts Collective.

A new exhibition by Mark Wallinger pushes the boundaries of what can be achieved with readily available, everyday materials and devices to invoke the mathematical sublime, and to make art 'work'.

Bringing together new and recent work across film, painting, drawing, and installation, Wallinger plays with the nature of perception, and how we seek to construct systems to make sense of the world around us.

Extending the exhibition into the courtyard with ‘The Other Wall’, Wallinger marks thousands of individual bricks, enumerating the fabric of our building.

Thank you to everyone who joined us to celebrate our extraordinary new exhibition FIELD by Mark Wallinger at Arts Collective. Such a great turnout, with so much warmth and conversation throughout the galleries and courtyard.

The evening continued around the table with a delicious Climate Kitchen dinner by @barneypau of The Gramounce. Responding to the themes of FIELD through food, it was a beautiful way to round off the celebrations.

A huge thank you to Mark, Barney, the Arts Collective team, our volunteers and everyone who helped bring the evening together.

FIELD is now open, free to visit and welcometo all. We look forward to seeing you in the galleries!

Mark Wallinger’s film ‘The force that through the green fuse drives the flower’, 2026 is on view in ‘Circling the Square’ at Paul Stolper Gallery

In Dylan Thomas’s famous poem, ‘The force that through the green fuse drives the flower’ the very ‘force’ that brings about creation carries its own demise. Time, the speaker argues, is constantly unravelling and renewing the world ‘and I am dumb to tell.’ Wallinger’s film captures this cycle through a continuous orbital tracking shot, filmed through the railings at the perimeter of Bedford Square’s garden. The vertical bars punctuate the motion and insist on the mechanics of its making, closely mimicking the zoetrope, or ‘wheel of life’, the precursor of early cinema. In the final projected work, Wallinger conjoins this footage with its own mirror image. The physical garden transforms, springing forth with endless mathematical perfection, symmetrical parity, pattern and order, and making manifest the phenomenological experience of perception.

We’re very excited to announce Mark Wallinger: Field — opening at Arts Collective this October.

One of the UK’s leading contemporary artists, @mark_wallinger_mark represented Great Britain at the Venice Biennale in 2001 and won the Turner Prize in 2007. His work spans painting, sculpture, film, performance and major public commissions, and is held in collections including Tate, MoMA and Centre Pompidou.

For Field, Wallinger brings together new and recent works across film, painting, sculpture and installation, exploring scale, number and perception — the systems we construct to make sense of the world around us. At Arts Collective Mark has created a new site-responsive realisation of 'The Other Wall' that was originally developed for Wallinger's 2012 exhibition SITE @balticgateshead extending through the architecture and historic courtyard of Arts Collective.
