LAST WEEK Mark Wallinger ‘Circling the Square’ at Paul Stolper Gallery

‘Bridging art and science, the ‘Fielding Painting’ series evokes the concern with facticity and surface characteristic of Colour Field painting, while simultaneously referencing the physics definition of a ‘field’ as a quantity present at every point across space and time. Wallinger translates this invisible phenomenon into tangible form by stretching layers of finely gridded mesh voile material over supports. The resulting tensions and misregisters between the meshes produce complex shifting moiré patterns, exhibiting the same principles of interference and displacement that govern sound waves, optics, and quantum physics, echoing the wave-particle patterns observed in the famous double-slit experiment. Through this elegant economy of means, Wallinger reveals the hidden mathematical frameworks that underpin both the natural world and human sight.’

On View until Saturday 24 October

‘In this latest attempt to express the inexplicable, Wallinger rises above and beyond his cerebral sources to act immediately on the senses before the intellect kicks in, and, as he puts it, “to make art work”.’ Louisa Buck

Climate Kitchen dinner at Arts Collective 🌱

Thank you Arts Collective (@artscollectivenn) for having me, representing my collective The Gramounce (@thegramounce), design a dinner for the opening of Mark Wallinger’s (@mark_wallinger_mark) show ‘Field’. It was an absolute pleasure to cook in the beautifully designed space designed by Giles Round (@gilesround), and curate a site-specific tablescape on bespoke furniture by Foday Dumbaya (@iamfods).

Responding to Mark Wallinger’s ‘Field’, the menu explored the relationship between monoculture and more diverse ways of growing—and their cultural, social and environmental effects. The family-style dishes were inspired by the richness of soil and the diverse ecologies it supports, alongside the uniformity of foods produced through monoculture.

The menu also incorporated produce grown at Arts Collective’s new Farm Urban hydroponic growing studio. Throughout the meal, I invited guests to consider how the ways we grow and eat shape our relationship with the world.

Thank you @eden_wild_floral for the gorgeous flower arrangements, @millybopbopbop for helping me bring it all together, @emermaryg for bringing me in, and my ever-patient father for helping out 💚

IN PRESS | Mark Wallinger
Louisa Buck in the @theartnewspaper.official on Mark Wallinger’s new series of “Field Paintings”, currently on show at Arts Collective Northampton, UK.

Extract from the article: “(…) Wallinger’s consistent ability to give powerful visual expression to complex and politically trenchant ideas around art, identity, the nature of human perception and sometimes even of our very existence is pretty much unsurpassed not just in the UK, but anywhere. His latest work, currently in two shows in Northampton and London, confirms he has lost none of this ability to fuse the deeply intellectual with the immediately accessible in unforgettable ways.”

Mark Wallinger ‘Circling the Square’ featured in @artsy London City Guide ‘Frieze Week London 2026 Exhibitions: Take a Closer Look’ by Arun Kakar

'Circling the Square' by Mark Wallinger includes new work that pushes the boundaries of what can be accomplished using readily available everyday materials and devices to invoke the mathematical sublime, and to ‘make art work.’ Through his new ‘Field Paintings’ and his film, ‘The force that through the green fuse drives the flower’, Wallinger investigates the phenomenological nature of human perception, exploring how we construct meaning from the world around us.

FIELD is now open at Arts Collective.

A new exhibition by Mark Wallinger pushes the boundaries of what can be achieved with readily available, everyday materials and devices to invoke the mathematical sublime, and to make art 'work'.

Bringing together new and recent work across film, painting, drawing, and installation, Wallinger plays with the nature of perception, and how we seek to construct systems to make sense of the world around us.

Extending the exhibition into the courtyard with ‘The Other Wall’, Wallinger marks thousands of individual bricks, enumerating the fabric of our building.

Swipe for a first look inside.

Thank you to everyone who joined us to celebrate our extraordinary new exhibition FIELD by Mark Wallinger at Arts Collective. Such a great turnout, with so much warmth and conversation throughout the galleries and courtyard.

The evening continued around the table with a delicious Climate Kitchen dinner by @barneypau of The Gramounce. Responding to the themes of FIELD through food, it was a beautiful way to round off the celebrations.

A huge thank you to Mark, Barney, the Arts Collective team, our volunteers and everyone who helped bring the evening together.

FIELD is now open, free to visit and welcometo all. We look forward to seeing you in the galleries!

Louisa Buck has written about Wallinger’s exhibitions in Northampton and London in @theartnewspaper.official , while the companion exhibition, Circling the Square at @paulstolpergallery, was selected by Jonathan Jones for @guardian weekly exhibition recommendations. I can finally reveal the project I completed before I went on holiday. Working with the fab people at @artscollectivenn as part of their Mark Wallinger exhibition, I was entrusted with recreating Mark's 'The Other Wall'. The original, made for his 2012 exhibition Site, at the Baltic Centre, consists of bricks numbered individually and randomly in chalk.

So I spent 5 days up a cherry picker, placing a unique number on 10012 bricks. And believe it or not, I enjoyed every moment. Such a pleasure meeting Mark this evening, it's not every day you get a hug from a Turner Prize winning artist.

Mark Wallinger’s film ‘The force that through the green fuse drives the flower’, 2026 is on view in ‘Circling the Square’ at Paul Stolper Gallery

In Dylan Thomas’s famous poem, ‘The force that through the green fuse drives the flower’ the very ‘force’ that brings about creation carries its own demise. Time, the speaker argues, is constantly unravelling and renewing the world ‘and I am dumb to tell.’ Wallinger’s film captures this cycle through a continuous orbital tracking shot, filmed through the railings at the perimeter of Bedford Square’s garden. The vertical bars punctuate the motion and insist on the mechanics of its making, closely mimicking the zoetrope, or ‘wheel of life’, the precursor of early cinema. In the final projected work, Wallinger conjoins this footage with its own mirror image. The physical garden transforms, springing forth with endless mathematical perfection, symmetrical parity, pattern and order, and making manifest the phenomenological experience of perception.
