For the third video from our series Artists on Artists: The Physical World, Mark Ruwedel reflects upon one of his own pieces in the show, Orchard #28C, 2022, (2022). He talks about the decline of citrus groves in the Inland empire, a sub-region within Southern California, which has as of late re-centred its economy around modern logistic hubs like warehouses for Amazon packaging. He also discusses the sorts of details that make him pause to compose a photograph.

“The desert is visually attractive to me; that may be because of my education and this kind of minimal aesthetic I inherited. I like that deserts don’t hide anything. Everything is there to be read: partly because there are no trees, but also because nobody ever seems to clean up in the desert. Within 100 metres of travelling into a desert you might see tank tracks from World War II practice maneuvers for the North African campaign, a 5,000 year old pre-Columbian trail, and a discarded Starbucks coffee cup. Some of my more recent projects have deliberately focused on that particular aspect, such as the objects left behind by people crossing the border illegally, or the detritus of abandoned houses that are subsequently vandalized. Everything inside them is ripped out and then deposited outside.”
