Mark Ruwedel on the Llano del rio colony and Aldous Huxley. We are thrilled to share a new portfolio by Mark Ruwedel: "All Tomorrow's Parties", 1992-2020 / 2021-21. All Tomorrow’s Parties is a portfolio of seventeen photographs surveying the history of failed utopias and communes across the western United States. From well-known and robust communes, like the Llano Del Rio colony in Antelope Valley, to obscure and short lived enclaves like Remains of a Hippie Commune in Anza Borrego Desert, Ruwedel documents what remains of the hopes for an alternative future. To further explore this project listen to a conversation between Mark Ruwedel and Theresa Luisotti in which they discuss the fascinating and bizarre history of these failed utopias. Link in bio.

The final step of every print edition: signing day ✍️ At The Lapis Press, this is one of our favorite parts of the process. It’s a chance to spend time with the artists we collaborate with, see the finished work come together, and reflect on everything that goes into bringing an edition to life. We’re honored to have worked with so many exceptional artists over the years. Here are just a few of the artists who have joined us for signing day. For the third video from our series Artists on Artists: The Physical World, Mark Ruwedel reflects upon one of his own pieces in the show, Orchard #28C, 2022, (2022). He talks about the decline of citrus groves in the Inland empire, a sub-region within Southern California, which has as of late re-centred its economy around modern logistic hubs like warehouses for Amazon packaging. He also discusses the sorts of details that make him pause to compose a photograph. Pictured: 1. B/W photograph of a tree: Mark Ruwedel, Redlands #26, 2021, (2021) 2. After another hot week, we are continuing our series of posts dedicated to the works currently on display in our 15th anniversary exhibition, Rumours. Today’s piece is... 23. Mark Ruwedel, Orchard #28C, 2022, 2022 Archival pigment print mounted on archival board Framed: 62.5 x 77.5 x 4 cm Exhibited in: Mark Ruwedel: Inland, Haunted by the Desert, 2022 “Before European colonisation, Southern California was, to a great extent, tree-less. The three trees that characterise the region – eucalyptus, palm and citrus – are all imports. Ruwedel focuses on these non-native trees, which are gradually disappearing as human activity encroaches further on the landscape.” [Mark Ruwedel, press release] Come and visit us, we are open today 11am-6pm! #Rumours #15thAnniversary #largeglassgallery #MarkRuwedel Image 2: Installation View ‘Inland, Haunted by the Desert’, 2022, photo: Stephen White and Co.

Seventy-Two and One Half Miles Across Los Angeles – Mark Ruwedel The concept is simple. Mark photographs while walking the same 72.5-mile route through Los Angeles that his friend, Nigel Raab, walked and wrote about. He undertook this in stages over four years, with no knowledge of the text, responding instead to his own sensibilities. I return to the book often, as its spirit reminds me why I am so fond of photography: the act of moving through a landscape and responding to it.

For the second video from our Artists on Artists: The Physical World Series, Rut Blees Luxemburg @rutbleesluxemburg talks about Marcello Galvani’s @marsgalvani work, Sant’Agata sul Santerno 08.02.2017 (2017) and Mark Ruwedel’s @markruwedel LA River/View #10, 2018 (2018) which sits beside it in the back room of the gallery. She reflects on the river’s place in American literature, as well as in the writings of German poet and philosopher, Friedrich Hölderlin. The rivers you see in the video are of details of the two works in the current anniversary show, Rumours, and the extra details of photographs you see are from the books from each artist, Galvani and Ruwedel. To celebrate the work of Mark Ruwedel in our 15th anniversary group show, Rumours, we are posting about a book that corresponds with his piece in the show, LA River/View #3, 2017, (2017). ‘Rivers Run Through It’ is part of an epic photographic account of the natural environment of Ruwedel’s home city of Los Angeles; a project for which he has been making photographs for the past decade. Los Angeles: Landscapes of Four Ecologies, Volume 1. From the stark Californian coast to the vast expanses of the interior – many of which have been further lain bare by wildfires – Ruwedel tracks a unique ecology in constant, if subtle, dialogue with the human life that surrounds it: one where wildness is designed, contested, permitted, or resisted to varying degrees of success. In this first of four volumes, Ruwedel follows the Los Angeles River from Big Tujunga Wash to the Pacific Ocean. Using patient, forensic large- and medium-format photography in black and white, Ruwedel recalls the legacy of nineteenth-century photographer-cartographers such as Carleton Watkins and Timothy O’Sullivan, as well as land artists and New Topographics photographers of the 1970s, while forging his own elucidating relationship with the landscape. The series title Landscapes of Four Ecologies recalls architectural critic Reyner Baynam classic study Los Angeles: The Architecture of Four Ecologies, which describes the city as ‘one of the ecological wonders of the modern world’. The scale of this four-part project, Ruwedel’s most ambitious to date, is an artistic statement in itself: ‘When I say epic,’ he explains, ‘I am thinking of a project that is too large, which has porous boundaries, which is almost out of control.’ MACK 2023 Debossed printed hardcover 30 x 24 cm 136 pages SIGNED £50 Please enquire on DM, or through our email to purchase a copy. #markruwedel #riversrunthroughit #losangeles #photographybook independentbookstore

We continue our series of posts; Each post is dedicated to a work currently on display in our 15th Anniversary show, Rumours. Today’s work is… 26. Mark Ruwedel, LA River/View #3, 2017, 2017 Gelatin silver print mounted on archival board 42 x 52 x 4 cm Exhibited in: Mark Ruwedel/ Cesare Fabbri, 2019 “Los Angeles may be the ultimate environment in which to study the dynamics of the nature/culture dialectic and the conflict between Arcadian and Utopian impulses - between being and becoming, promise and reality. Last year [2022] I heard on the radio that one in four Angelenos are not aware that there actually is a Los Angeles River. I am writing now in the wake of eleven atmospheric rivers that have caused massive flooding and damage in Southern California, reminding residents that there are, indeed, rivers running through Los Angeles. The Los Angeles River might remind us that our human infrastructure is not emancipated from the natural world but rather has metabolised new ecologies.” [Mark Ruwedel, Rivers Run Through it, MACK] Come and visit us, we are open Wednesday-Saturday 11am-6pm! #Rumours #15thAnniversary #largeglassgallery #MarkRuwedel #LAriver @mack_publishing Image 2: Installation View ‘Mark Ruwedel / Cesare Fabbri, 2019, photo: Stephen White and Co.

Good afternoon all, we are beginning a new series of posts where we highlight one of our books from the shelf and today we wanted to show you a few pages from East Lyme: Two visits to Walker Evans’ House in Connecticut by @markruwedel and James Welling. Walker Evans lived in this house in East Lyme, Connecticut, from 1967 until shortly before his death in 1975. The house was designed by Evans and his friend Robert Busser, a Yale architecture student. Letters and postcards were often addressed to Old Lyme or Lyme because their Mail truck turned around at Stewart’s Corner, East Lyme. Dale Callaway, current owner of the house, writes: “What changed was the post office deciding it was about time for East Lyme to take over that route. A letter would arrive here with almost any address on it because the majority of Mail carriers just knew who lived where.” James Welling visited in August, 2016. Mark Ruwedel visited in January, 2018. They were unaware of each other’s visits until later. The black-and-white photographs are by Ruwedel. The color photographs are by Welling. @nazraeli.press 2024 Hardcover 20 x 27 cm 32 pages £40 Find the book on our website and enquire through the link! #walkerevans #photographybook #bookshop

2025 wrapped 🫨 • This year was a “mixed bag” to be polite. Spent a lot of time on set with a lot of talented people, spent a lot of time on “set” alone, started my MFA @hartfordphotomfa, listened to sage advice from a few legends, made new friends and new memories with old ones, discovered an affinity for photographing people’s studio spaces, made a lot of new work, updated my website, found new places in my own backyard, ate well … Here’s hoping that 2026 is also greater than the sum of its parts and a huge thank you to everyone who made the best parts of 2025 so bright 🥂
