Finished piece for @turners.company.of.london connect2023 exhibition I was invited to submit a piece for, 18th & 19th of October at @the_pewterers_company_ Hall. The category for submission is the ‘Masters Exhibition’ the theme ‘Coronation’. Details available @turners.company.of.london website. This piece is inspired by the ‘Monarch’ butterfly paying homage to the environmental work of King Charles III. The main hollow form turned in sycamore wood is divided into six sections, three containing the surface texture of a Monarch butterfly egg representing new beginnings as with the coronation. The other three sections are textured with shapes from the wings of the Monarch butterfly. These shapes were traced and manipulated to fit using CAD (computer aided design) software in this case @affinitybyserif . The finial was carved in boxwood again with the design taken form the Monarch butterfly wings and manipulated in CAD to fit the over all composition of the piece. After the design was finalised this was drawn by hand onto the sections of the form and finial with texturing being achieved using various @saburrtooth burrs as well as dentist burrs for the finest detail using micro motors and @nsk.uk air turbine rotary tools. The piece was coloured using @modernmastersinc bronze reactive paint, copper leaf, @chestnutproducts spirit stains, acrylic artist paints, acrylic inks using airbrush, 24ct gold leaf. The piece is presented on a slate base that was textured using diamond ball profile burrs again using a micro motor. Cherry hollow form recently finished . 170 mm dia x 190 mm tall. This piece is a gift for the person that gave me wood from their cherry tree that had to be reduced in size due to outgrowing its space. A couple of pieces finished today bar the buffing. Largest is spalted sycamore gifted to me by my good friend John Creevey @john140491 🙏 . Have turned two roughly the same size from the piece given to me. Size is 280 mm (11 inches ) diameter x 240 mm ( 9 1/2 inches ) tall . Pith included which enabled me to take advantage of the radial spalting . The other small hollow form is spalted beech 35 mm ( 1.4 inch ) diameter x 30 mm ( 1.2 inches) tall, hollowed with a 3 mm Allen key . Will give them a buff tomorrow once the cellulose sanding sealer has hardened off,then a few coat of microcrystalline wax and polished . #woodturning #hollowforms by @marksanger_uk

Oak burr hollow form 90 mm diameter x 90 mm high, just over 3 1/2 inches for my American friends 😊 Hollowed with home made 8 mm Allen key hollowing tools. Finished with danish oil. Will be left to dry overnight and buffed. #woodturning #oakburr #hollowform by @marksanger_uk

Latest piece I am working on , sycamore hollow form approximately 300 mm tall ( 12 inches ) x 150 mm diameter ( 6 inches ). Similar techniques used as with the last few pieces I have posted with colour/acrylic paints being added with an airbrush. For this effect I build up many layers of colour and hues over and over until I achieve the desired effect. Here I have also added some textured areas on top of which metal leaf was applied with washes of various colours applied over this to produce a patina. Lots of fun being had making these 😊, with various other ideas to explore! #woodturning #hollowform #airbrush #creativity by @marksanger_uk
