Recently saw @boardgamer_anne ‘s post about Ahau: Rulers of the Yucatán. On her post I commented that I’ve played this one once and liked it, but not sure it’s a keeper for me. But it’s been so long since that one play (June 2023) - just haven’t had the interest level in getting it back to the table. Which I guess should be enough to tell me to move it on, but I want (at least) one more play.

So it takes up space both in my shelves and in my mind and sits in an ever growing queue of games I need to get to the table. Yeah, I need to play this before the next convention Math Trade…. by @marksgamegram

After losing 3 straight games of Twice as Clever!, I had to switch things up with Clever 4 Ever. I’m not sure which is my favorite in this series, but I like them all. They are especially addictive as solo and two player games. by @marksgamegram

Yeah it’s ugly, and it’s the only game I’ve ever had to physically mark up to prevent player confusion, but the game play here, especially the scoring, is fantastic. #CarpeDiem by @marksgamegram

Anyone play a roll-and-move game lately? The only one I’ve played in the last 20 years is 2017’s Merlin by Michael Rieneck and Stefan Feld. This is one of my favorite games that I’ve picked up on the second hand market. Each player has four dice that they roll at the start of each of the six rounds. Then players take turns using their dice to move their knight around the board to take the actions of the spot they end on. One of the four dice is a special white die that is used to move Merlin either clockwise or counter clockwise around the board. Knowing that other players can also move Merlin and knowing what their dice are adds a timing element of when to move Merlin. There are also flags you can acquire that allow you to utilize special one time abilities as well as the holy grail which gives you an apple allowing you to change a die to any side. There’s a little area control, a little order fulfillment, and a great looking game board that provides excellent table presence. This is roll & move done right. Highly recommend this one. by @marksgamegram

Back to back games of The Castles of Burgundy. First game with the original game and the second where everyone played with the same map in the Special Edition. I don’t know why, but I always do so much better with the original game. I scored 253 in the original game and got the win, but only 213 with the deluxe version and finished 3rd. This has been a common pattern with me and this game. Anyone else experiencing much poorer performance when playing the Special Edition? by @marksgamegram

Guilds of London is a fun multi-use card, area control game with a dash of meanness. Apparently not so much meanness that my game group actually liked it. Probably because I finished third. They tend to like games when I finish third. 🙄 by @marksgamegram

It’s been a long time since I’ve had as much fun playing a game as my recent play of Bonfire. Great people at the table and a really good game. Wasn’t sure where I stood in the game when I triggered the end, but magic happened in those last 5 turns and I managed to light all 7 bonfires and get all 7 paths and portals. Now if only I could figure out how to efficiently place those action selection tiles - I’m really bad at that part of the game. by @marksgamegram

Looking for a nice, relaxing game? Check out Applejack by Uwe Rosenberg. It’s a light tile laying, spatial puzzle game where you’re trying to group Apples of the same type together so you can harvest points when each Apple type is scored. It’s light on rules and the decision space is limited by which tiles you can choose which makes for fairly quick turns. We can usually play a 4-player game in about an hour. It plays the same at all player counts, taking off about 15 minutes per player. by @marksgamegram

Visited @raincitygamesyvr while in Vancouver and picked up a locally produced game: Reforest. Has anyone played this? A store employee told me it was like Wingspan but for forests. I asked if it was like Forest Shuffle and he said he’d never played it. I guess I’ll find out soon enough. 🤷🏻‍♂️ by @marksgamegram
