OK sorry to do this to you but one for the road into the sunset.

A warm thanks to everyone that came out for MCA’s Mixed Taste Cuba and Andy Warhol.

So many friends there and all the kinds notes ..means more than you know.

Thank you MCA… Working with Sarah Baie / @bobbylefebre and team was dreamy…its a regular high end variety show, production .. a smart fun mc, spot lights, and music and cooking segments and live audience participation… and a spoken word poet @kenyamahogany11 summing it all up AMAZING!.

For those that missed the speedboat here is my narrative / lecture and images up on my project archive blog … Comments, grievous errors let me know. I will be editing and adding titles dates credits

(Link in Bio)

I was scared to death but thank heavens…
I rolled through a couple hundred slides a Mixed Taste record..

Getting laughs and joyful hoots and claps really really helps …

My mission was to brief over things most people might not know… fun facts.

Set the stage with Andy’s little known first show outside of NYC in Aspen 1956. Blotted line works that he did with his mother Julia.

Next was Expo 67 and our family trip to Montreal there in Bucky Fullers dome was Andy the superstar of the artists presented. I was nine years old.

Next was out to my great aunts BridgeHampton beach home where Andy had been the weekend before filming Loves of Ondine. My signature next to his.

Next was meeting at the Denver art museum in 1977 getting the double Elvis poster signed.

Next was falling in love in Ft Collins 1981 bloody from a bicycle race crash and being invited into his personal world…

The shock and repulsion at first seeing behind the high art curtain to then coming back realizing the Duchampian genius in it all i was experiencing with my camera in hand. It’s an out of body experience thinking about it all today .. hard to believe i was really there. Thank god i had my camera. And Pat Hackett putting me in Andy’s Diaries.

Andy suddenly leaving us ..that was the end of NYC for me .. it was back to Denver full of bravado a great fertile time to be part of starting all sorts of great things… like MCA by @marksink

MCA Mixed Taste Cuba and Andy Warhol is going to be fast and furious fun… they always are … @mca_denver .

or “fast, easy, cheap, and modern” as Andy would say… in fact, he said to me when reviewing my work, “you gotta be modern “

It’s been a wild ride preparing a 20-minute talk about a lifetime of Andy Warhol.

For those of you over tired me talking about Andy and me, note i am focusing on his strong mother, icons, the mechanical line and photography in all.

I have a lot of fun stories and insights but any one of those takes up 20 mins by itself.

I started out with 300 slides … 3000 word essay. After the family review, I chopped out half CUT CUT CUT .. It’s still a bit manic pushing just to many ideas… so cut cut a little more…. and adding more rare personal witness insight.

Over all its been great to pull down the books ,the Kodachrome of slides, and family history and interweaving it with Andy.

I had great fun writing the essay straight out, then sharpening it up . Online news and museum archives and Warholian fan pages are amazing, great fun to explore.

I am going to post the long essay on my blog.. with a little more eroticism, … and maybe an eventual chapter in a book one day.

There are over 2,000 Unique books. books on Warhol .Dozens of Major Biographies. Blake Gopnik's “Warhol” is the most recent most complete in-depth and insightful. He very kindly helped me with this talk.
1,200+ Exhibition Catalogues
Catalogue Raisonné (6 Volumes)
80 Books by Warhol (or his estate)

A massive posthumous unique art mountain.

Genius is a unique vision….

Museum of Contemporary Art Denver
Cuba and Andy Warhol.
Not sure what i was thinking .. i accepted to talk July 15th about Andy Warhol at their wonderful Mixed Taste ” Tag Team Lectures on Unrelated Topics” @mca_denver the other speaker is Anna Alejo a award-winning journalist with CBS talking about Cuba.

Mixed Taste uses one of my favorite words “serendipity” describing how the talks roll. I love the magic of chance.
And it should be noted one of Andy’s early favorite spots in the mid 1950s was a cafe named Serendipity .. he often displayed and traded commercial outtakes for meals and confections.
This touches me because Kristen and I and others traded art for meals with beloved ZCuisine farm to table French bistro here in Colorado.

Andy who is one of the most researched artist in the world is daunting to talk about. So i decided to focus on a few lessor known simple topics that had a great impact on myself and generations of artists.

First is Andy’s mother Julia, and her influence and collaborations, And i focus how all things radiate from Andy as a photographer…and discuss the making of a simple line.

…….and i hope to talk about self promotion with original art.

The event is hosted by my Northside spoken word hero poet laureate Bobby LeFebre.

I’ve been on a wild queer history ride this week reading the autobiography “Son of Andy Warhol” by friend and hero Taylor Mead.

Taylor passed away in Denver in 2013. His wonderful niece Priscilla Mead carried his wishes on and assembled and published the memoirs he had been working on for decades. “ A bohemian poet, underground actor, and Warhol superstar. Known as the “first underground movie star” ( 1950s) , he injected queer, scatological defiance and radical humor into both the Beat poetry scene and experimental cinema”.

Through the lens of Taylor, you’re taken on wild adventures, one foot in the gutter one foot in royalty , hitchhiking, cruising his way across the country, stealing cars, flipping tricks, beaten up to near death and stabbed by homo haters, going to jail just for shelter, landing cowboys in Colorado and being a central character in Warhols silver 60s Factory and films and rarley being paid. Landing Montgomery Cliff in Central Park plays with Al Pacino and Schlesingers Midnight Cowboy and Saturday Night Live. Inside accounts of sidekick Holly Woodlawn in Trash are priceless …for Trash was a movie that changed my life in school.

When I first met Taylor at the Odeon in the early 1980s I recognized him from a Saturday Night Live short film about he and his cat. I had no idea he was a Warhol superstar. The first thing he said was “they never paid me”. Throughout the years I got to know Taylor and his history. I built a big fan crush on his performative brilliant dark humor and sensitivity… by far one of my favorite New York humans. He would ask me do you have any money? When i produced a bill he invited me to come to a bodega to buy cat food and walk around the lower side feeding feral cats. He had a lot of cat friends. He came to my opening events, including the Denver Mud People performing in the South Bronx at Fashion Moda. -pictured.

Taylor’s archives, artwork, films, poetry are all here in Denver. Very little has been seen by the public. I hope to help assemble a possible exhibition and public home.

Flash Back Friday
“First Across” 107 Years ago , May 8th 1919 my grand papa Engineer James L. Breese took off from New York headed to Lisbon ..Three giant wood and canvas Navy flying boats.. Just one made it The NC-4. It’s an epic tale few know. It’s just one of the page turner chapters that is being assembled into a magnificent new book by history writer Emmy award film maker and long time friend Steve Procko. Through his rediscovery and forensic research, visual passion and story telling, he produced a treasure. Extraordinary depth in the characters…Its a father and son story, a family story…. a wild wild family story producing an American hero. Of course its an out of body experience me… a wish come true. More soon. This and other stories and teaser reels coming… historybend.org

Duane Michals gifts to Denver University.

A great show is up in the @myhrengallery. My hero.

In the 1970s when i was first starting photography I came across a book by Duane Michals that had a great impact on me at many levels. Portraits, of course, portrait theory. The old adage don’t take a picture make a picture, the camera doesn’t matter, … staged photography, reverse technology using a simple cheap manual 35mm camera normal 50mm lens to make magic. I always say a great picture talks to you and keeps on talking. That is the power of his beautiful work. Several chapters of my life connect directly with him. I’m going share my stories on my blog.

And here he is today sharp, sassy and as ever kicking out better work than most 80 years younger. He is at the top of the pantheon… Roaring.

It’s rare to find someone whose drive is so wonderfully pure… the ol art for arts sake.

Outside Influence
Photography in Colorado 1945-1995
by Rupert Jenkins

Like a traveler from the outside looking in Rupert realized there was an important story to be told of Colorado’s rich photographic history. And here it is from hundreds of interviews, countless hours of research we have chapter after chapter of photographic discovery and rediscovery at its best.

I have to ask. ..What if these stories were never told ? Poof gone. I have open wounds now of all but deleted family and art community history.

Our fine art photographic community and educators will increasingly realize what a great gift Rupert has produced. The impact rings radiating around the global photography community. It flies the Colorado flag high, it celebrates our local talent but so much more. Starting with gatherings of histories fine art photography gods in Aspen in 1951 to Minor White to vision shifting Robert Adams introducing New Topography. To Mark Klett’s Postmodernism Re photographic project (which was reviewed in the conceptual family of Sherry Levine and Richard Prince. Many lost super talents saved like Wes Kennedy, Chris James and others that never made print pages or history museum indexes. .

Everyone loves a great story. This book is full of them. The highlights for me are the inter connections and influences that weave us all together.

Rupert Jenkins THANK YOU

@coloradophotohistory

Come celebrate and thank Rupert…book signing ….

Thank you to everyone who came to the Family Ties show at the Arvada Center. I was not on my game photographing all the wonderful people and friends that came to support the exhibition.. It’s really a wonderful show “continuing the creative legacy”. To see my longtime friend Emilio Lobato‘s great grandfather‘s Native American weavings next to his pieces was moving. To see the Hallmark work of Herbert, Bayer and Koko .. dear friend Ky,oko Ono, and her mother‘s writings. So many close friends, the Strawn’s paintings. The Aiello family. The Magyars .. many more. What a great community… the father and son sorely missed is Collin and Chuck Parson.. of course ethics of curators prevented it. My hats off to Collin and team were doing such a beautiful job such an honor so proud to stand there with my sister, daughter, my wife and my mother and father on the wall behind me.
