This #WorldPhotographyDay, we’re celebrating some of our favorite artma photographers! Their donated artwork to artma helps raise funds for pediatric cancer research, turning beautiful images into meaningful support for a mission that reaches far beyond the gallery walls.

Because when artists share their vision, we can help create a new one: a future where every child with cancer has better treatments, better outcomes, and a better chance to grow up.

Today, we celebrate the photographers who help us see differently and help us believe in what’s possible.

Want to see more of their work? Visit their pages, explore their photography, and give them a follow!

A new addition just arrived from @galerianudo in San Miguel de Allende, a lovely portrait of JMB by @marksink. Purchased not so much for the subject, though he’s integral to the vibe, but because it’s simply a gorgeous, haunting portrait we had never seen before. Love the analog quality, which we now know was due to the cheap plastic camera with crap lens! Analog forever.

From @basquiatofficial :

“This distinctive portrait of Jean-Michel was taken with a Diana camera by Mark Sink, who photographed several artists and personalities from the New York art scene of the 1980s with the iconic plastic camera. Looking back, Sink shares:

“I am grateful that I got to know Jean-Michel and call him a friend. He was a very complicated soul and that is clearly expressed in his work. He is one of the most pure, free and unique artists to emerge out of NYC in 1980s. It’s amazing to see how his spirit and inspiration has carried on into the millennial generations of young emerging artists today.”

My first wet plate! 🎨

S/O to @oldblackkettle 📲

What an amazing experience, there’s nothing like reverse technology and immersing yourself in the nostalgia of photography and cameras.
To think that these images are creating without post-production software is actually magical.

The old stuff is the new wave 📸

“Cancer” or “Rust” Belt

I pass by a refinery every day on my way to work.

For companies that once claimed to be driven by science, their focus now seems primarily on human interests. Among the questions I ponder is how you define geographic decline. When will you start questioning the toxic sludge that organizations have spread at your feet—those that ignore the ethical side of science and commodify living beings like humans and the environment with inanimate findings, prioritizing profit over scientific integrity?
Refineries serve as vital yet dual-purpose infrastructures for cities. They are major economic drivers, offering high-paying jobs and gathering significant tax revenue. This means that shutting down refineries can have a damaging ripple effect, reminiscent of the Rust Belt’s decline, hitting local economies hard.

I’m behind the refinery duct with a gas flare, utility pole, and power lines crossing horizontally. I set my wife-angle pinhole camera to a 4-and-a-half-minute recording of my standing posture in a solid white gown. I bring you this question: Are refinery areas more like Cancer or the Rust Belt? #environmentalart #naturaleza #experimentalphotography

On the pollution front, refineries emit harmful substances, including particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, and hazardous air pollutants such as benzene. These pollutants increase the risks of asthma, cancers, and other health issues, disproportionately affecting marginalized communities. Additionally, exposure to gasoline fumes can cause genetic damage in oral cells.
I’m giving a pose with a handful of teeth, warning of the genetic form deformity that affects human health and leads to tooth loss.

Had a wonderful visit with @marksink in his studio today. We traded wet plates and I just had to take this beauty I dug up in his 2009 archive, which he told me was inspired by the work of Ruth Thorne-Thomsen (an amazing surrealist photographer and one of Mark’s mentors). Excited to get it framed! Thank you Mark!
