So much love in the room for this awesome human @thisisbrooked at Bellbrae Tennis Club (yes, you read that right - it’s her spiritual home:) this afternoon for the launch of her new novel No One’s Looking. A heartfelt intro from her brother (and fellow @hachetteaus writer) @rhettdavis , and a great roll up of local readers, writers and tennis players! Excellent support too from the wonderful @torquaybooks . The book, by the way, is brilliant - and well worth the ten year wait! by @marksmithauthor

We all know the big names that will dominate @abcradionational ’s Top 100 Australian Books and they will ALL be adult books. HUZZAH! I wrote #ifnotus five years ago. It tells the story of a small community’s fight to close a dirty coal mine and power station in their town - told through the eyes of seventeen-year-old Hesse, who reluctantly joins the campaign when Dutch exchange student, Fenna comes to town. It’s about finding your voice and speaking up. @stjosephsgeelong has been teaching the book at Year Nine for three years now and the response from students has been amazing. I could ask for nothing more than this sort of response from students like Cormack - young people engaging in the climate debate, calling out decision makers and talking truth to power. Hesse would be proud! @text_publishing by @marksmithauthor

Another great stack of books from my August reads. I've written about these and things I've listened to and watched over on my Substack.

The general theme running through my August reads are truth, memory, belonging and what happens when the world we thought we understood begins to shift beneath our feet. As I mentioned last month, the themes reveal themselves in hindsight and often surprise me with the connectedness to each other, and with what’s happening in the world around me. There’s been a lot going on recently that can leave us feeling powerless and hopeless, and I guess these books have, subconsciously, been my way to make sense of this.

The Road To Winter doesn’t rate a mention in the list for @abcradionational Top 100 Australian books - even with 70,000+ copies sold, taught in schools around the country and the gateway book for so many teen readers who are now dedicated adult readers.
