‘Together We’ now welcomes passengers at both entrances of the newly opened Cambridge South station. The work draws on research into Cambridge physician William Harvey, whose landmark text ‘De Motu Cordis’ (1628) was the first to accurately describe the body’s circulatory system. 📣 Public Art, Care, and Connection: The Role of the Artist in Healthcare Environments Panel Discussion.
Join artists @amaliapica, @morison_studio, @johummel_ and @marktitchner, in conversation with Rosie Cooper (Director, @wysing.arts.centre), for a panel discussion exploring the role of the artist in shaping hospital environments for patients and staff.

Tuesday 30th June, 17:30 - 19:30, in person and online.

Together, they will explore how artists, clinicians and communities can collaborate to create healthcare environments that inspire creativity, promote wellbeing and humanise healthcare. The discussion will consider the unique opportunities and challenges of creating art for clinical settings, the importance of co-production with patients and staff, and the ways in which public art can contribute to healing, identity and a sense of place within hospitals.

As Signature Artist for @cambchildrens, Amalia Pica will share her vision for creating playful, imaginative work that brings a sense of wonder to the hospital environment. Ivan Morison and Jo Hummel will reflect on the distinct commissions they are developing for the Cambridge Cancer Research Hospital, each offering different approaches to material, place and the experience of moving through the building. Mark Titchner will share his experience of creating work for healthcare settings, alongside his recently unveiled commission at Cambridge South station @cambridgebiocampus.

This is a hybrid event, with the option to join via livestream.

For his Art Mail postcards, @marktitchner explored Winsor & Newton watercolour pencils for the first time experimenting with thin washes, densely worked layers, and drawing back into the surface to build outlines, highlights and shadows.

“The artworks are typical of my practice,” he shares, “bringing together graphic elements and colour to create a tone or atmosphere for the text.”

His phrase “It is you” holds multiple readings at once. “It” can feel vast a shorthand for “everything,” suggesting “You are everything.” Yet it can also speak in a more offhand, impersonal way. The ambiguity is where the work lives, inviting each viewer to decide what rises to the surface.

A postcard that’s small in size, big in resonance and now travelling into our global gallery. by @marktitchner

What an honour to hear Mark Titchner and Lucy Owen speak about the Questions About Us placards tonight at Two Temple Place.

I knew Seni’s story (and if you don’t, the film RIP SENI is still available via the Guardian website) but hearing about the process behind the work really brought into focus the challenges. The careful shaping of each question. The reality of the Mental Health Act (2005), and how impenetrable it can feel in practice.
And then the decision to site the placards around the perimeter of Bethlem Royal Hospital. That threshold space. Not quite inside, not quite outside. It carries a weight of its own. A sense of boundary, of being held in, or kept out.

The works themselves are powerful enough. ('Do you understand the decisions you are making' is one that I can apply to myself on an almost daily basis!) But the unknown collaborator who brought Seni's story to everyone's attention means they took on an even greater resonance. The artworks themselves grew into an object of protest and remembrance.

The works were produced as part of @bethlemgallery Mental Health and Justice Project which ran from 2018-2022 and was funded by @wellcometrust

On display at @twotempleplace until 19th April as part of #theweightofbeing by @marktitchner

Olaseni Lewis (Seni) died on 3 September 2010 after being restrained by up to 11 police officers for up to 45 minutes while he was seeking help as a voluntary patient at Bethlem Royal Hospital during his first psychotic episode.

A series of mirrored placards, titled 'Some Questions About Us' were later commissioned from @MarkTitchner as part of the project Mental Health and Justice, in which researchers and artists explored legal capacity in mental health care. They were installed around the perimeter of Bethlem Hospital.

These forthright questions relate to issues of mental capacity and assessment, but can also be read more widely, addressing personal autonomy, the individual’s relationship to the state, and the fragility of that position.

In 2020, at the height of the Black Lives Matter protests, the placards were graffitied with single letters spelling out: RIP SENI.

In 2018, the Mental Health Units (Use of Force) Act, or ‘Seni’s Law’, was passed following campaigning by the Lewis family and their local MP, Steve Reed.
However, racism continues to pervade all aspects of healthcare. The film RIP SENI reveals the fight for justice bereaved families have faced, when their loved ones have died at the hands of those that should have protected them.

Seni would have been turning 39, instead he died when he was 23. Partway through studying for a Masters degree and with plans to travel to the US to undertake a PhD.

The placards asked powerful questions when they were created. The graffiti changed them into a call to action and a demand that Seni's story is told. They are on display as part of The Weight of Being at Two Temple Place until 19 April.

You can find out more about the campaign @ripsenifilm

It was directed by @daisyifama with @lizzie_reid_ @graceshutti and Lucy Owen.
