From skinny to strong. 💪

And one cannon event in my life (my dad passing) changed it for me.

Being strong is more to me than just physical.

It's something that's helped me immensely these last few years to focus, and prove to myself that I can keep getting stronger.

I'm now the strongest I've ever been. And I never thought I'd get here (and still getting stronger).

If you need help with this, send me a DM or follow me. I'll continue to post regardless and help as many people get strong 💪 taken in Vancouver, British Columbia by @marktlopez

Both Joe and Marina competed in their first meet last week❗

Couldn't be more proud of these two. 🙏

Both of them worked extremely hard, couldn't have asked for better athletes.

Can't wait to see both of them grow within the sport of powerlifting. 💪

Posts incoming for both of them. 💪

Appreciation post to my three athletes that competed this past weekend. 🔥

Couldn't have asked for a better bunch to coach, and we're just getting started. 💪

Last April, I quit my 9-5 in social services field to become a coach.

I had one powerlifting athlete at the time, and now I have 7❗

Creating a team wouldn't have been possible without these guys and the rest of my athletes, and I couldn't be more proud of them. ❤️

I want to create a community of positive and supportive athletes, leaving out any kind of negativity to have the best possible mindset. 🙏

In the end, all the hardships are worth it.

To DJ, Jasmin, and Tiffany - you all did so good for your first meet.

I can't wait to see all your growth within this sport. 💪

This goes for all my athletes that will be competing in the future, and it is all in the works. 👀

Thanks to all of the guys from @thebarvancouver who came out to support as well. 🙏🙏

Without hip flexion you're now just using your back to pick up the bar‼️

And this is because you have to hinge on a deadlift and if you can't access the position to grab the bar, you've run out of room to move and your back will take over from there.

Try these out and follow for more. ✌️

Definitely does not mean do more meets‼️😅

But to get more clear on these skills:

👉 Navigating meet logistics

Learning how to manage everything happening around your lifts. Warm ups, knowing when your flight starts, attempt changes, and even just the flow of the meet. Getting better at this will have less mental energy figuring out what you need or can do. And now you can focus on lifting.

👉 Rules, commands, execution.

Completing lifts to competition standards is key. Know the rules, listening to the commands, and what gives you white lights with your execution is something you work on in training as well.

👉 Attempt selection

Making decisions based on your data and how you feel that day is something that needs to be learned! The numbers you planned on doing might make sense, but sometimes how you're performing might tell you you need to go in a different direction. You need to learn how to make these calls.

👉 Psychology

How are you responding under pressure? Meet doesn't go according to plan?

The questions on this comes back to can you stay composed and not let it compromise your mindset?

This is something you eventually learn to get better at. Especially if you want to stay in the sport long term.

If you let the pressure and emotions get to you, it can be hard to love the sport that ultimately helps you become the best and strongest version of yourself.

The more you compete, the more you understand how to work through all of these.

I think the biggest thing is to just have fun‼️

No matter what the outcome. ✌️

Wedging is essential when setting up for a strong and stable bench press. 💪

This is one part of a good setup.

As you slide and drive yourself into the bench, you use the bars weight to create pressure and tension on your upper back, neck, and head by pushing into the bar❗

Do you sandbag your Bulgarians because it's feels like crap?

I know I've done it.

But after telling myself I'd push my Bulgarians hard, my squats started getting stronger and feeling better. 💪

Try it out. 💪

Been hearing a lot of people say top sets aren't as important as your backdowns‼️

While I think this can be true, I think your top sets can be as important.

But I think it's important to note that because both are important, most lifters like to over emphasize the top set.

Then quality of work drops right after.

While there's many things you can do for this, part of what I do is ascending work.

And maybe adding a fatigue single later on.

And this is important because what I prioritize most is quality of reps, and what you're trying to achieve within your session.

These weren't the only things I did to work through my back pain due to limited hip extension.

There's also other accessory work I did to help through this.

But these two did help open my hips before my deadlift session so I'm able to at least get into a good position (aka extend through my hips and not my back).

Pain can be multifaceted and complex so follow for part two as I explain how I got through my back pain by strengthening and opening my hips. 💪

If you have a checklist of things you need to remember for your squat, bench, or deadlift.. you're overthinking.

Especially when you mentally use that checklist on the platform.

Even in training, I'll always encourage to use 1 to 2 cues that can address multiple things at once.

And when it's time to compete, I intend for those cues to be more instinctive so you don't have to think about it anymore.

If you need help with this, follow for more. 💪

Hinging is something you should be doing in order to grab the bar on your deadlift‼️

With tight hamstrings, because you can't hinge back further, you end up grabbing the bar instead using your back to round.

But for context, this depends as well on your setup and leverages. You want a certain amount of hinge at the start in order to create space between you and the bar‼️

There is a point where you don't need to hinge more and can be excessive.

But the point to make in this video is that if you do have a bad hinge because of tight hamstrings..

It'll end up looking like the dog in the picture 🐕
