“There is no feasible excuse for what we are, for what we have made of ourselves. We have chosen to put profits before people, money before morality, dividends before decency, fanaticism before fairness, and our own trivial comforts before the unspeakable agonies of others”

Iain M. Banks, Complicity

Between 1986 and 1988, I spent most of my summers in the USA. The entire summer of ’86 was spent at a performing arts camp in Hancock, New York, where I ran the darkroom, taught bass guitar, and played violin in the theatre musicals. Another memorable summer was spent living with my Nan and working alongside my uncle and cousins building house decks. Around that same period, I also worked for my great-uncle at his vinyl window company in New Jersey. Good times.

Visiting family was always a pure joy. Reconnecting with grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins felt effortless, no matter how much time had passed we always picked up right where we left off, laughing and having fun. While much of that era now feels like a blur from a completely different lifetime, my camera was always on hand, capturing fragments of those precious memories. Whenever I visited New York City, I’d catch up with the friends and family based there. I would also wander the streets and make photographs. It was a thrilling place to be - fast-paced, and packed with unexpected sights, sounds, and smells around every corner. It’s been about 20 years since I was last there, and I am certain I would be amazed by how much it has changed. Still, I hold onto wonderful memories of my youth spent there.

In 2008, I visited “The Revolution Continues: New Art From China” at the Saatchi Gallery. This stunning exhibition surveyed contemporary Chinese political and social commentary through the works of 30 leading artists. It reframed Mao’s cultural legacy through the lens of modern consumerism, rapid urbanisation, and historical trauma.

1. Zhang Dali’s ‘Chinese Offspring’ featured hanging casts of figures modeled directly from real rural migrant workers who traveled to Beijing for construction work. Hanging upside down by their feet looking like carcasses on a meat hook, highlighting powerlessness and displacement.

2. Shen Shaomin’s ‘Unknown Creatures’ are impressive skeletons of mythical creatures meticulously crafted using real animal bones. Shaomin collected skeletal remains from a wide variety of animals, reassembling them into new biological structures that bear no resemblance to the original creatures

3. ‘Civilisation’ by Bai Yiluo is a collection of ceramic portrait busts of Roman emperors, philosophers and matrons mounted on plinths, each pierced by wooden agricultural pitchforks. The work serves as a metaphor for class struggle and political upheaval - the historical tension and conflict between poor and rich, the ruled and the rulers. by @marktmcevoy
