Finally shared a new substack post that I literally had a dopamine rush while writing it. I have such a lore behind finally reading this book. Two years ago on my birthday, I heard Claudia Rankine read an excerpt of an unpublished version of this book and was truly inconsolable in the audience. I might need to make a part 2 lol but here's a little belated post about one of the top highlights of 2025 for me. Thank you SO much to everyone who came and made this night so beyond moving, affirming, and special. I had the profound pleasure of sharing some of the work I was able to complete on my Audre Lorde-inspired manuscript thanks to my NYSCA grant. And my very talented, dear, dear friends Hubby Jenkins and Denali Thomas shared some of their music and poems as featured artists, which was such a huge bonus gift. It's so funny. I was so stressed leading up to this event and anticipated being a nervous wreck while I read my essays, but when the time came, I felt just so secure and comfortable in a way that I don't know if I've ever experienced before. I know part of that was because the audience was mostly made up of folks who go above and beyond when it comes to loving and supporting me. But it was such a thrill to feel so present and read to an audience who was right there with me while I shared what Audre Lorde and her influence means to me. I don't know when I'll have the time and resources to pull off something like this again, so please know how much your presence meant to me if you made it out. I was still riding the high of my workshop at @tin_house at the time of this reading and this night was yet another whisper in my ear from my ancestors (including Audre, of course) Valerie Boyd, and all who were present that night that sounded something like "hey, your writing is actually pretty good, and you should keep going." Really hoping for more moments in 2026 that leave my heart feeling as abundantly full as this night did. 🩷 And thank you to @_jaslab for documenting!!! 📸 taken in Weeksville Heritage Center by @marlee.writes
