After four years on the road, Three Dimensions enters its final exhibition stop at McIntosh Gallery, Western University, running through December 5. At McIntosh, the exhibition centers on Balancing Act, which you may have seen at Royale Projects in 2024. Visitors operate the monumental crane built on the logic of industrial excavation but familiar like the game you’d find at an arcade, to build soft sculptural configurations, which directly echo the quasi-anthropomorphic forms depicted in the adjacent paintings. It is playful yet deeply compelling, translating complex themes of construction, resource extraction, and corporate control into an unstable game of chance where the viewer becomes an active co-author.

A major milestone for Jennifer Marman and Daniel Borins: their new monograph, Three Dimensions, arrives November 10, right as their national touring exhibition of the same name reaches its final presentation at McIntosh Gallery, Western University (on view through December 5). The finale is marked by the release of a new companion book out November 10, featuring analytical essays by Kanika Anand, Ray Cronin, David Diviney, and Philip Monk that trace Marman and Borins' expansive practice across painting, sculpture, kinetics, and video.

Rather than asking viewers to passively observe, the exhibition treats reality as an open variable. Audience members become active operators inside immersive environments that pull seamlessly from science fiction, media oversaturation, and speculative politics. The result is a smart, engaging study of how contemporary images circulate and how we navigate the systems behind them.

Currently installed at McIntosh Gallery through December 5, THX2020 places the viewer directly inside a sensory feedback loop. The installation dynamically alters on-screen visual compositions in real time, collapsing painting, video, and human response into a live nervous system. It represents Marman and Borins at their sharpest, probing the line between technology, psychological feedback, and contemporary life.

The forthcoming book Three Dimensions (out November 10) features essays by Kanika Anand, Ray Cronin, David Diviney, and Philip Monk, documenting THX2020 alongside ABCD, the AI and VR installation presented at Contemporary Calgary, the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, and the Beaverbrook Art Gallery earlier in the tour. Together in print, both works offer a comprehensive look at where physical space ends and simulated reality begins.

Jennifer Marman and Daniel Borins: Three Dimensions showcases the multidisciplinary art practice of Jennifer Marman and Daniel Borins, combining painting, sculpture, kinetics, interactivity, virtual reality, and video.

The installations in Jennifer Marman and Daniel Borins: Three Dimensionsblend conceptual, interactive experiences. Together, they explore themes of authenticity, agency, and the digital age through performativity and interactivity. They reference both high and popular culture, blending science fiction, politics, and current events in a pop-minimalist setting. For Marman and Borins, the aim is to disrupt traditional notions of reality — whether authentic or synthetic — and present dimensions that challenge the viewer’s perception, blurring the line between “audience” and “participant.”

In this visually rich publication, essays by curators Kanika Anand, Ray Cronin, David Diviney, and Philip Monk accompany a rich panoply of the installations and their individual components in situ, prompting contemplation about visual language, mass media, consumerism, and the ways that images circulate in the information age. Published by Beaverbrook Art Gallery with Contemporary Calgary and the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, hardcover, 168 pages, now available from our online shop #marmanandborins by @royaleprojects

“Jennifer Marman and Daniel Borins: Three Dimensions” opens July 27th at the McIntosh Gallery, Western University in London, Ontario, Canada. The exhibition showcases the artists’ multidisciplinary art practice, with this iteration of the show featuring two installations: “Balancing Act and “THX2020,” combining painting, sculpture, kinetics, and interactivity.

“Balancing Act” consists of a user-controlled large-scale claw crane game where participants can stack sculptural components and create ad-hoc compositions. Accompanying the installation are paintings depicting various combinations of the sculptures. “THX2020” is an interconnected installation that combines paintings, narrative video, and an interactive headset that responds to bio-feedback by moving shapes on video screens.

Taken together, “Three Dimensions” emphasizes viewer participation and explores themes of authenticity, agency, and the digital age through performativity and interactivity. Like many of their previous works, the installation references high and popular culture, combining science fiction, politics, and current events in a pop-minimalist setting where symbols are equalized in hierarchy. For Marman and Borins, the exhibition aims to disrupt traditional notions of reality—whether authentic or synthetic—and present dimensions that challenge the viewer’s perception. With an emphasis on engagement, the artists prompt contemplation around visual language, mass media, consumerism, and the ways in which images circulate in the information age.

This exhibition will be on view through December 5th, 2026.

Jennifer Marman and Daniel Borins’ solo show, “Three Dimensions,” opens this week at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery in Fredericton, Canada! The exhibition is organized and circulated by Contemporary Calgary, AB, Canada, and will be on view through February 16, 2026.
_______________________________
“Three Dimensions” emphasizes viewer participation and explores themes of meta-realties, agency, and the digital age through performativity and interactivity. Like many of Marman and Borins’ previous shows, the installations in this exhibition reference high and popular culture. Here, the artists combine science fiction, time, and temporality, and contemporary cultural commentary in a pop-media setting. In this multi-part exhibition, images, signs, and symbols are equalized and their hierarchies disrupted, toward a commentary on the ways in which meaning in popular culture has become both stronger and the cause of its own implosion.

For the artists, the exhibition aims to alter notions of reality – whether authentic or synthetic – and present dimensions that challenge the viewer’s perception. With an emphasis on engagement, the artists provoke contemplation on visual language, mass media, and popular culture, as well as a focus on how images circulate in the information age. Plotlines of construction, deconstruction, mind control, mimetics, media flows, and temporality are artfully woven together in an experiential three-part exhibition containing multidisciplinary installations.

In “Three Dimensions,” painting is sculpture, video is painting, viewers are artists, and viewers are recorders, reality is multilayered, the virtual is reality – in a transhistorical progression…folding into layers—until the show itself disappears.

In Sit You
Marman and Borins
2024
120” x 187”x 9”
Rotating Triplesign Billboard
Accompanying paintings
Royale Projects, Los Angeles
Video Documentation from Art Toronto

“In Sit You” employs a Tri-Vision billboard comprised of vertical panels that rotate – to produce three different images – a composition of coloured stripes in motion. When the lines of the billboard rotate, the shifting stripes of colour create a sweeping optical effect. The billboard appears two-dimensional between image shifts, yet its rotating three-dimensional triangular columns move the project along.

The theme of In Sit You literally revolves around flatness and three-dimensional motion. Between each flip the viewer sees harlequins of geometric shapes. It is as if the stripes are being bent into several dimensions that refer to rendered perspective while re-affirming the “flatness” of abstract painting.

From the vantage point of a bench painted to match the billboard, the viewer becomes part of a conceptual framework and is aware of the multiplicity of the installation’s title In Sit You. The regular purpose of the advertising billboard is replaced by an abstract visual experience. In Sit You, first installed at the Toronto Sculpture Garden in 2006, transgressed public space by placing a park bench in front of a billboard or vice-versa.

In the gallery space, in 2024, In Sit You takes on another role reflexively. Here the project is out-sized, resonates as mass-media, yet flips back into high art as a surprising intervention. A series of paintings accompanies the rotating billboard and speaks to a multiplicity of abstract outcomes. Triangulated, the viewer ‘sitting’ on the bench completes the project.

The 2006 version shown at the Toronto Sculpture Garden is included here too.

“In Sit You” employs a Tri-Vision billboard comprised of vertical panels that rotate – to produce three different images – a composition of colored stripes in motion. When the columns of the billboard rotate, the shifting stripes of color create an intense optical effect. Although the surface of the billboard appears two-dimensional between image shifts, it is comprised of rotating three-dimensional triangular columns. Between each flip the viewer sees harlequins of geometric shape and rotations of line. It is as if the stripes are being bent into several dimensions that refer to rendered perspective while re-affirming the “flatness” of abstract painting.

Originally commissioned by the Toronto Sculpture Garden (2006) subsequently installed at the Albright Knox Gallery In Buffalo, NY (2010) “In Sit You” is accompanied by a matching bench. The regular purpose of the advertising billboard is replaced by an abstract visual experience. Mass media and high art combine, a setting completed by a seated viewer who becomes part of a conceptual framework and is aware of the multiplicity of the installation’s title ”In Sit You”.
