Ladan Sedighi: The Paradise of Cyrus

Holographic film, vinyl wrap and acrylic sheeting, the materials of car culture and commercial signage, pulled into grids and bands that trace back to the Persian garden at Pasargadae. Peter Frank places the work where finish/fetish meets Light and Space.

Opening the same evening: Bradley Harms, Everybody's Perfect.
Through December 5

Bradley Harms: Everybody's Perfect

After decades of machine-precise abstraction, Harms turns to the processes of the home: cutting, dyeing, ironing, sewing, stuffing. Paintings "familiar in the hand before it's understood by the eye, something you'd want to hold before you'd want to explain.”

After four years on the road, Three Dimensions enters its final exhibition stop at McIntosh Gallery, Western University, running through December 5. At McIntosh, the exhibition centers on Balancing Act, which you may have seen at Royale Projects in 2024. Visitors operate the monumental crane built on the logic of industrial excavation but familiar like the game you’d find at an arcade, to build soft sculptural configurations, which directly echo the quasi-anthropomorphic forms depicted in the adjacent paintings. It is playful yet deeply compelling, translating complex themes of construction, resource extraction, and corporate control into an unstable game of chance where the viewer becomes an active co-author.

A major milestone for Jennifer Marman and Daniel Borins: their new monograph, Three Dimensions, arrives November 10, right as their national touring exhibition of the same name reaches its final presentation at McIntosh Gallery, Western University (on view through December 5). The finale is marked by the release of a new companion book out November 10, featuring analytical essays by Kanika Anand, Ray Cronin, David Diviney, and Philip Monk that trace Marman and Borins' expansive practice across painting, sculpture, kinetics, and video.

Rather than asking viewers to passively observe, the exhibition treats reality as an open variable. Audience members become active operators inside immersive environments that pull seamlessly from science fiction, media oversaturation, and speculative politics. The result is a smart, engaging study of how contemporary images circulate and how we navigate the systems behind them.

Currently installed at McIntosh Gallery through December 5, THX2020 places the viewer directly inside a sensory feedback loop. The installation dynamically alters on-screen visual compositions in real time, collapsing painting, video, and human response into a live nervous system. It represents Marman and Borins at their sharpest, probing the line between technology, psychological feedback, and contemporary life.

The forthcoming book Three Dimensions (out November 10) features essays by Kanika Anand, Ray Cronin, David Diviney, and Philip Monk, documenting THX2020 alongside ABCD, the AI and VR installation presented at Contemporary Calgary, the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, and the Beaverbrook Art Gallery earlier in the tour. Together in print, both works offer a comprehensive look at where physical space ends and simulated reality begins.

NATHAN MABRY: Bird Watchers identifies existing chromatic resonances across the grounds, engaging the viewer in a quiet dialogue between object, environment, and observer.

Nathan Mabry’s Birdwatchers (Naturalist) introduces a bold chromatic intervention along the walkways of Hotel Bel-Air. Constructed from fabricated aluminum and stainless steel, the work merges structural minimalism with stylized figurative elements. Its vibrant surface forms a deliberate dialogue with the grounds' blooming Canna flora, establishing a visual link between industrial geometry and the organic landscape.

Nathan Mabry’s Birdwatchers (Navigator) commands the pool terrace at Hotel Bel-Air through architectural scale and luminous surface tone. Set against the white wrought-iron gates and ivy hedge, the wide blue structure mirrors the movement and chromatic depth of the swimming pool below. In the spirit of Constructivist sculpture, Mabry rejects decorative sentimentality to lay bare the raw tension between industrial fabrication, weight, and space, exposing structural joinery, unadorned hardware, and elemental geometry as the primary expressive force but then “puts a bird on it”, extending his ongoing examination and disruption of pop tropes and formal modern ideals.

In NATHAN MABRY: Bird Watchers, the act of looking is central. As guests navigate the grounds to find these sculptures discreetly nestled within the dense foliage of Hotel Bel-Air, they are, in turn, watched back.

Positioned within a secluded alcove, Nathan Mabry’s Bird Watchers (Sightseers) operates as both a striking visual landmark and an open-ended narrative. Specifically drawing on the rich, deep purple of the native Tibouchina as a primary visual anchor for the monumental form. Standing nearly ten feet tall, this assemblage remixes the language of modern and pop sculpture by fusing industrial metal components with a stylized avian figure and electric color. The resulting work introduces a subtle wit and spatial tension into the hotel’s historic environment.

Nathan Mabry’s Birdwatchers (Onlooker) activates the courtyard lawn at Hotel Bel-Air through spatial scale and subtle color harmony. Positioned directly within the lush garden clearing, the painted aluminum sculpture deliberately reflects the soft mint and emerald tones of the surrounding palm fronds and cycad foliage, exaggerating these undertones and subtle hues to create a surrealist juxtaposition of green on green. Mabry fuses geometric pedestal structures with a perched ibis, continuing his exploration of formal minimalism framed by site-specific landscapes.

Positioned within an architectural alcove, Nathan Mabry’sBirdwatchers (Peek-a-Boo) operates as an intimate narrative study in geometry and light. The work draws on soft sky-blue tones as a primary visual anchor against warm stucco surroundings. Fusing circular geometric plates with a perched seagull, the assemblage introduces a subtle wit and spatial tension into the hotel’s historic loggia. It also creates a direct chromatic and formal dialogue between constructivist geometry and the historic ecosystem of historic Hotel Bel-Air. The work mirrors the estate's iconic fauna, such as the resident swans on Swan Lake, and its lush botanical surroundings. The vibrant blue finish acts as an intentional visual bridge, echoing blooming hydrangeas and peaceful water features to integrate modern abstract sculpture seamlessly into the hotel's storied landscape.

NATHAN MABRY: Bird Watchers begins by identifying existing chromatic resonances across the grounds. Mabry’s intervention subtly complicates expectations of material and composition, engaging the viewer in a quiet dialogue between object, environment, and observer.

Nathan Mabry’s Birdwatchers (Kaleidoscope) activates the architectural plane as you enter the restaurant at Hotel Bel-Air through spatial relief and vivid color. Wall-mounted directly to the plaster facade, the painted aluminum structure intentionally echoes the intense magenta tones of the property's blooming Bougainvillea. Mabry combines geometric negative space with a perched watcher, extending his ongoing dialogue between formal sculpture and site-specific intervention.
