A few pieces from the world I’m building.

Texture. Figure. Color. Space.

Some works are quiet.
Some take over the room.

Black contemporary art by Marquest Cathcart.

A selection of works from my current practice — exploring portraiture, texture, color, abstraction, scale, and the presence a piece of art can bring into a space.

Created for the wall, but meant to change the room.

For collectors, galleries, hospitality spaces, and interior designers seeking contemporary artwork with a distinct point of view.

Which piece would you live with?

Save the one that stayed with you — or send it to someone whose wall you can already see it on.

What happens when the face becomes a pattern before it becomes a person?

This piece lives in that space between recognition and disappearance.

A dark face emerges through rows of dots, vertical interruptions, and shifting tonal density. From a distance, the portrait feels almost solid. Up close, the structure begins to break apart — image becoming pattern, pattern becoming information, information becoming something harder to hold onto.

The eyes are hidden. The expression is restrained. Only fragments of the face are allowed through.

For me, the work speaks to the tension between visibility and erasure — the way identity can be seen, categorized, recorded, distorted, and still remain deeply private.

The negative space matters just as much as the figure. The white surrounding the portrait gives the darkness more weight, while the repeated marks create a rhythm that feels almost mechanical against something unmistakably human.

I wanted it to feel quiet from across the room and increasingly complex the closer you get.

A large dark face fills the central composition, constructed from dense black halftone dots and vertical linear patterns that partially obscure the eyes and upper face. Small highlights define the nose and lips, while repeated rows of dots and fine marks extend above and below the portrait. The overall composition is minimal, graphic, high-contrast, and contemplative. taken in Cape Town, South Africa by @marquest_art

Some parts of us are exposed. Others are protected. And sometimes the line between the two is almost invisible.

A single face sits between two fields — one nearly weightless, the other saturated in red. The figure remains still at the center, eyes closed, as if the moment is happening inward rather than outward.

I wanted the contrast to carry the tension: light against heat, surface against shadow, vulnerability against restraint.

The closer you look, the quieter the piece becomes. Fine marks, fractured textures, imperfect edges, and subtle changes across the black surface keep revealing themselves.

It isn’t necessarily about choosing one side.

It’s about existing between them.

Collector, gallery, licensing, and exhibition inquiries welcome. Gallery of Square contemporary figurative artwork featuring a large dark face with closed eyes centered across a divided background. The left side is predominantly soft white with faint linear texture, while the right side is saturated coral-red with subtle scratched and painted surface marks. The face is nearly black, with delicate red highlights around the eyelids and fragmented texture across the upper-right portion of the head. The composition is minimal, symmetrical, textured, and contemplative. taken in Cape Town by @marquest_art

I wanted this piece to feel quiet without feeling empty — a moment of reflection, distance, memory, and whatever comes after.

The structure feels permanent.
The branches feel temporary.
The figure exists somewhere between the two.

He sits on a narrow horizontal ledge beside a tall charcoal-gray architectural form, surrounded by delicate bare branches and scattered deep-red floral accents. A small glowing circular light appears near the upper left of the figure, while dense, tree-like textures gather along the bottom of the composition. The overall image feels quiet, minimal, and contemplative. by @marquest_art

There’s something powerful about seeing a portrait hold its own against the scale of a city.

This piece was created to live beyond the screen—to become architectural, intimate, and commanding at the same time. From the quiet profile to the sculptural form of the hair, the work is about presence: the kind that doesn’t need to announce itself to be felt.

I’m interested in creating work that can transform a wall, anchor a room, and still reward you when you stand close enough to notice the details.

Through the gallery window, a monumental square portrait is displayed on a white wall inside a slim black frame. The artwork depicts a Black woman in side profile with dark skin, a sculptural braided updo, delicate earrings, and a bare shoulder against a warm neutral background. Reflections of historic surrounding buildings appear across the gallery glass, layering the portrait with the architecture and street scene outside. by @marquest_art

Art changes when it enters a space.

Seen from the street, framed by glass, architecture, reflection, and city movement, the work becomes part of the environment around it. This is the kind of scale I imagine for my pieces—quietly commanding a room without needing to compete for attention.

A study in presence, identity, texture, and form.

A monumental square artwork hangs on a warm white gallery wall in a slim black frame. What Grows Within

Some things grow where no one can see them.

This work explores the relationship between identity, memory, vulnerability, and growth. The figure emerges through layers of botanical forms, color, texture, and fragments of nature—part portrait, part interior landscape.

I wanted the flowers to feel less like decoration and more like evidence of something living beneath the surface.
