It shouldn’t be. The state must never be in the business of ending life. Ever. It must strive to make life an act of love. by @marshallhyde

The Whitney Museum of American Art in New York has presented its $100,000 Bucksbaum Award to New York–based sculptor and performance artist Pat Oleszko. Oleszko was chosen for the honor from among the fifty-six artists and collectives included in the 2026 Whitney Biennial. Oleszko was unanimously selected to receive this year’s honor.

The Detroit-born Oleszko over a career spanning more than five decades has gained acclaim for her handcrafted environments and for her use of humor. Through a practice additionally incorporating costume, film, and participatory works, she takes up themes including politics, gender, labor, the environment, and everyday life.

“Pat Oleszko is a singular force in American art, who has delighted, inspired, and challenged her audiences for half a century,” said Whitney director Scott Rothkopf in a statement. “By honoring Oleszko with the Bucksbaum Award, we continue the Whitney’s longstanding commitment to recognizing artists whose work expands the field, animates the present, and opens new ways of seeing the world around us.”

I have known and worked with Pat for most of that five decade career. We met when I was an undergrad in art school, and our art club brought her to campus as a visiting artist. She is fearless, and fiercely committed to her personal vision of “satire, subtle-tease or insubordination.”
Over the years she has given so many artists, including me, so many opportunities to participate, get uncomfortable, explore, work your ass off, eat soup, have illegal amounts of fun, and become a family. Pat is my big art sister. I have always been so proud of her, and now she can add this accolade to her 4 NEA & NYFA grants, her Guggenheim, Rome Prize, DAAD and her Bessie.
I love you, Pat, see again you soon. Oh, and you’re buying. by @marshallhyde

It’s time, once again, to step away from social media. No one here depends on me for news or inspiration. The folks here that I follow for news and inspiration I also follow on substack, where I can delve deeper into their ideas. You can follow them there, too.
I may see some of you in Ithaca on Oct 13 for the Cornell 7 protest, and I will make it down to Delaney Hall when I can, but I need to focus on my local community, where I can make a tangible difference. I need to put on my oxygen mask before I can help others.
I’ll be deleting the app, but not my account. You may see it here, but I won’t be able to see you until I come back some day, which I surely will
Stay informed, stay focused, and stay strong, we are going to need each other in the real world in the weeks, months and years ahead. Love to you all. And VOTE. by @marshallhyde

Speaking of his thoughts on love:

Another trip around the sun, another decade wrapped, and another beginning. A year of grief and loss, a year of reunion with extraordinary people, a year of art and travel and activism. I will try to do better. Hopefully I’ll see each of you in this coming year, and every year after. I’ll strive to maintain the hope, enthusiasm and wonder of 18 year old me in the first slide

At the 1978 Langston Hughes Festival at @ccnycitycollege , JB turns the idea of whiteness inside out.

His argument is not simply about skin color. He asks us to consider how people who once understood themselves as French, English, Italian, Greek, Russian—and so on—came to understand themselves through a new collective identity: white.

And, as JB so often does, he moves from history to the moral question beneath it. If whiteness had to be created, what did its creation require—and what has been required to sustain it?

Then he leaves us with Malcolm:
“White is a state of mind.”

So I’ve come to another little crossroads where I have to step back from insta to spend my valuable time in the real world. I have artwork and images to make, and I let myself be too distracted here. I’m deleting the app from my devices, so I won’t see your posts or messages, but my account will be here.
For those of you who can manage the balance, you should definitely check out the astonishing work and ideas of my friend @markdoox, whose work is pictured above (I am beyond blessed to be the caretaker of this piece. You can support him by buying his work, too.)

Below are 20 accounts that I think it’ll be worth your time to follow if you don’t already do so, in no particular order: @tadstoermer, @cohen.489, @jbouie, @defenestrans, @amandasmildtakes, @wordclown, @tressiemcphd, @kate_forthepeople, @justinjpearson, @perezbrenna, @epistemiccrisis, @jayneconverse3, @montemader, @stocking_the_capitol, @taxali, @krisgoldsmith85, @misanharriman, @iampoliticsgirl, @bookersquared, and @cassiewillson_ By no means a comprehensive list, but a good mix of facts and insight and humor.
And I will add two quotes here, the first from Nicole Hemenway (@nicoleflowing) and the second from Zorhan Mamdani (@nycmayor)

“If your own activism doesn’t make you feel afraid for the consequences you might face for doing it, it’s probably not challenging the status quo.”

“Justice is not measured by where we stand after history has issued its verdict. It is measured by where we stand when the verdict is still being rendered.”

Be well, you beautiful souls. See ya when I see ya. by @marshallhyde
