The British School at Rome presents Cloistered, a group show curated by Marta Pellerini @martapellerini opening Wednesday 28 May at 6 PM and running until 27 June 2025.

Featuring BSR residents Can Gun @can_.gun Sophio Medoidze @sophio_medoidze Cathie Pilkington @cathiepilkington and Ash Tower @ash.tower alongside Rome-based artists Cristina Lavosi @cristinalavosi and Andrea Mauti @andreamauti Cloistered explores the tensions between creative retreat and cultural isolation.

Each artist is paired with a writer—curators, poets, academics—whose texts will be published in a booklet available during the show.

Open Monday to Friday, 3–7 PM. Free entry.

Quando incontri il femminismo, quello vero, niente nella tua vita è più lo stesso. Il mondo intorno a te è costantemente messo in discussione, i rapporti umani vengono stressati, alcuni finiscono per sfilacciarsi irrimediabilmente. Il compromesso è qualcosa che ti sta stretto. Hai bisogno di confronto, di sostegno, di qualcunx che comprenda quello che stai attraversando, in modi diversi magari, ma sempre con la stessa prospettiva. Di una sorella che sia sempre e comunque dalla tua parte, anche quando te la vedi brutta per aver mandato a fanculo un maschio etero cis guidando nel traffico romano. Hai bisogno di un amore immenso. E quando trovi tutto questo il femminismo non è più solo dolore, è un superpotere. Siamo state fortunate Flà, pensa che c’è gente che tutto questo non lo proverà mai. Quel giorno di febbraio, in quell’aula di università, abbiamo deciso consapevolmente di volerci bene, di stare dalla stessa parte, di condividere una delle esperienze più incredibili delle nostre vite. Sarai sempre con noi amore grandissimo, nel nostro viaggio contro la paura. by @martapellerini

The third and last event in the ‘Speaking to Power’ film series will be held on 26 March 2025 at 6 pm, with the screening of “Few Can See” (2023, 42mins) & “2 Channel Land” (2022, 15mins) by director Frank Sweeney.
The film is in English with Italian subtitles, and it is followed by a Q&A between the director Frank Sweeney and Manuela Pacella.

The second event in the ‘Speaking to Power’ film series will be held on 5 February 2025 at 6 pm, on occasion of the LGBTQIA+ History Month, with the screening of ‘Il Principe di Ostia Bronx’ (2017, 74min) by director Raffaele Passerini.
The film is in Italian with English subtitles, and will be followed by a Q&A between the director Raffaele Passerini and curator Eleonora Santamaria.

🎬 Speaking to Power: A Film Series 🎬

We are excited to launch “Speaking to Power”, a documentary film program curated by Dr. Eloise Fornieles and Marta Pellerini, showcasing powerful stories of subversive acts of resistance. Through inventive storytelling, performance, and humor, these films amplify the voices of those speaking truth to power.

The first screening is “Together with Lorenza Mazzetti” (2023) by Brighid Lowe, a moving portrait of the pioneering filmmaker, artist, and survivor of Nazi occupation, Lorenza Mazzetti. Known for her groundbreaking contributions to British cinema, Mazzetti’s legacy is re-evaluated in this 55-minute film, featuring pivotal archival footage and interviews with the filmmaker at 90.
