Sometimes when I enter the ocean, I feel that that’s actually where I belong, much more than on earthy land. I begin to wonder what life is like for those who live full time underwater, and in that wondering, I have this trippy feeling of becoming one with them, at least for a few seconds. These feelings, sensations and thoughts come and go during the many hours that I spend riding the ocean’s waves.

This artwork explores the question: where does my human body end and my life as a sea creature begin? It is, of course, also highly influenced by my background in textiles, my love for patterned crafts, and my fascination with repetition.

I believe art came into my life because I love disconnecting from reality 😂 I need that silence, being alone without people talking, creating a separate world. However I’m real bad at doing nothing, I struggle with just being lazy and chilling 🙃 I wish I were good at it, but I’m quite a restless person. Art became the perfect way to stay active during this much needed alone time.. Then slowly it became the path itself.

Today art connects me to the world through my purpose, brings amazing people into my life with whom I feel aligned, and keeps me excited and focused on the future. I’m grateful every day for this connection that needs no wordsssss ✨✨✨ by @martas.studio

Velvet backgrounds to add a little bougie 🫦 depth and a different experience!

I've always believed that art objects have the power to transform the artist, and that they can hold a strong energy when they are created with a clear intention. Throughout my travels, I've spent long hours observing ritual objects charged with meaning and symbolism across different cultures. One thing I've noticed is that repetition often plays an important role in reaching transcendent states through artistic and ritual practices.

This is what led me to spend time exploring repeating circles and nothing else, allowing the colours to shift intuitively with the moods and experiences of my weeks :)

Meet Marta Troya.

Marta is a Spanish visual artist exploring the meeting point between contemporary art and ancestral craft, where pattern and repetition become more than technique — a meditative, almost ritual practice.

During her residency at Volubilis in May, the garden became her studio. Its colours, textures and atmosphere entered into her creative process, inspiring a series of works made during and around her time here.

On September 26, these works return to the garden for an evening exhibition, with Marta present to share the work and the ideas behind it.

Come and experience the pieces in the place where they began. Take your time with the work, meet the artist, and join us for an evening of art, conversation, drinks and good company.

For the last 2 months, I’ve been an artist in residence at @padastudios on an industrial park just across the river from Lisbon :)

After leaving London 8 yrs ago and being based in my hometown ever since, I found myself craving more and more of what my life had felt like back then: being surrounded by talented, inspiring, ambitious artists and a likeminded community. I missed that sense of exchange, of being challenged, of constantly seeing and learning from what other people were doing + I really missed committing myself fully to the development and depth of my own work.

I feel incredibly lucky to have had this opportunity, mostly bc I arrived to the most welcoming group of people and found a big artistic sisterhood 💕 Caring, inspiration, hard work, support, curiosity, and so many laughs. I know for sure that this experience wouldn’t have been the same without my group 🫂

Along the way, I also met @ritazorro who opened the doors to her studio and gave me the chance to develop a whole new body of work with Portuguese clay. And I feel very lucky to have had @sergiofazendarodrigues as our tutor and curator throughout the residency. I felt deeply understood and at the same time challenged - made me realise there was so much more I could push, question and develop, and that I had been sitting quite comfortably inside my own practice for a while. Thank you for seeing me :)
