I will never forget today…
⠀
Not because I bought an upgrade to First Class for my flight to Sydney…
⠀
But instead, because as I sat down in my seat today I got a message saying that the Education and Skills Funding Agency (EFSA) had approved MNU as a fully funded qualification. Like degrees etc in the UK.
⠀
It is the first/only Nutrition Qualification of its kind to receive this. Essentially this government agency deems that studying our qualification helps someone become more eligible for employment & or would improve their professional skills for career advancement.
⠀
We had to do so much to demonstrate just how impactful studying MNU is & to find out we were able to articulate it enough, even when strings are being hugely tightened in this area, was completely overwhelming.
⠀
I burst into tears & cried…. into my caviar & lobster tail…. True story. Don’t hate. 🙈
⠀
I’ve listed quite a few huge wins recently but I just want to say a massive thank you to everyone who has played a part in this; however big or small.
⠀
Success often comes with hate. Especially when those who said they wanted you to win realise they don’t actually want to see you WIN win. I’ve had my fair share of that!
⠀
But while others sell out on biotech & supplements, I’m proud to say that after 8 crazy years…. It feels like the legacy of MNU has finally become…. Inevitable 👊🏼 ❤️
⠀
Love you all. Here’s to the next 8 years making the industry better & impacting even more lives positively ❤️

I’m biased towards lowER carbohydrate intakes in a lot of instances.
⠀
Having a bias & actively working against it allows you to be much more rounded in your knowledge & practice.
⠀
In PMOS/PCOS there is a SMALL, I repeat SMALL, potential benefit of lowering carbohydrate intake.
⠀
Whether that is by enhancing dietary adherence as we sometimes see in individuals with insulin resistance.
⠀
Or the slightly improved metabolic markers in women with PMOS eating a slightly lower but equally calorific diet.
⠀
Or just an ‘Advantage of Implementation’ (M. MacDonald, 2012 😉)… it’s sometimes just easier to implement/coach/do a lower carb diet!
⠀
Anyway,
⠀
The point of this post is to call out the idea that women with PMOS who want to lose weight or improve their PMOS…
⠀
NEED to cut out carbohydrates.
⠀
That the reason they are not losing weight is because they have too many carbohydrates in their diet ❌
⠀
THIS IS FALSE.
⠀
NO STUDY has shown this to be the case!!!
⠀
Many many studies that have seen weight loss and other improvements in PMOS symptoms have included a significant proportion of carbohydrates!
⠀
Azadi-Yazdi et al (2016)
Gower et al. (2013)
Frary et al. (2016)
Moran et al (2006)
⠀
Oh & guess what, they also include gluten & dairy. LOL
⠀
So how do you lose weight with PMOS? Is it low fat? High monounsaturated fat? A vegan diet?
⠀
The systematic review by Moran & colleagues tells us exactly this:
⠀
“through reducing caloric intake in the setting of adequate nutritional intake and healthy food choices ***irrespective of diet composition***.
⠀
I’d just probably recommend NOT aiming for a very low fat, high carbohydrate diet.
⠀
But if you do… get your carbs from the types of carbohydrates they use in the Hall et al plant-based studies.
⠀
Legumes, fruit, veg, high fibre grains etc.

Who remembers this audio? 😂😂😂
⠀
If you actually read the PMOS/PCOS research you see REAL women in the REAL world, improving their PMOS…. whilst eating carbs, gluten, dairy and EVEN sugar!
⠀
These aren’t cell studies, or lab rats, or even humans living in an artificial environment.
⠀
Real life women with PMOS who have
⠀
👉🏼 Reduced insulin
👉🏼 Reduced testosterone
👉🏼 Improved blood lipids
👉🏼 Reduced acne
👉🏼 Reduced facial hair growth
👉🏼 Improved menstrual function
👉🏼 Weight Loss
⠀
I have a podcast on PCOS, Dairy & Fertility if you want to hear more! Episode #47 of ‘Not Another Nutrition Podcast’

Starvation mode doesn’t exist 🚫
⠀
“Eating more to lose fat” kinda does. Because people eat more (consistently) & stop bingeing.
⠀
Disinhibition is a hugely important factor that isn’t discussed enough when it comes to adherence/weight loss maintenance.
⠀
There are research based methods to reduce disinhibition but when we buy into pseudoscience like “starvation mode”, people get disempowered & don’t focus on the things a that matter.
⠀
No hate on this creator. She’s clearly just uneducated/misinformed...❤️

PMOS Awareness Month seems more pertinent than ever this year! ❤️🙏🏼
⠀
Sadly, the popular ‘PCOS weight loss’ charlatan woman (can’t tag as she’s blocked me) is still spreading her misinformation that ALL women with PMOS should cut out dairy & gluten 🙄
⠀
All sorts of non-sensical, unscientific reasons will are given for this…
⠀
#InFlaMmATioN anyone 🙄
⠀
Specific to PMOS the only paper I’ve EVER seen cited…

Is is a paper from 2015 that put people on a restrictive diet that led to them being in a circa 1000kcal deficit AND made them remove dairy (except cheese) & ‘starches’
⠀
To make matters even less clear, they didn’t even have a comparison group!⠀
⠀
This means you literally have no idea if it was the low carb, the low dairy or the 1000kcal deficit (& associated weight loss) that led to the:
⠀
☞ Improved Insulin Sensitivity (some women with PMOS are insulin resistant)
☞ Reduced Testosterone (elevated Testosterone is one issue women with PMOS face)
⠀
Things we DO know from the research…
⠀
Weight loss leads to these things even when you eat dairy & carbs..
⠀
Dairy is often seen to helping with insulin sensitivity…
⠀
So take home point? The one study kind of looking at this subject shows NOTHING.
⠀
& we have other studies that do NOT exclude foods that show the same results…
⠀
Long story short… if you have PMOS… you can keep eating dairy… & especially cheese 🧀😋
⠀
You’re welcome.

New podcast episode out now with @martinnutrition

Martin MacDonald is one of my longest sought after guests and we finally got to sit down and record a podcast. And it’s worth the wait.

You’ve heard the narratives about:
-Faster weight loss causes greater weight re-gain later
-Slower fat loss leads to better long term success
-Faster weight loss contributes to eating disorders
-Faster weight loss causes metabolic damage
-More aggressive dieting automatically causes greater muscle loss
-Deeper calorie deficits cause more hunger

Well, what if we told you none of this is true and that there’s 50 years of research and evidence to support aggressive dieting as a superior approach for most people.

Martin breaks down this evidence in a thorough masterclass on aggressive dieting. This includes:
-The research and practice debunking all of the above long standing beliefs.
-parameters on the appropriate rate of and approach to aggressive dieting.
-The advantages of taking a structured aggressive approach to dieting for fat loss.
-How an aggressive dieting approach can blunt hunger
-Why shorter more aggressive periods of dieting can lead to better outcomes for most people.
-The handful of categories of people aggressive dieting isn’t suitable for.
-Nuanced thoughts comparing GLP-1 medications to aggressive dieting.
-What Martin means by granting “Unconditional permission to eat”.
-Changing beliefs with evidence across Martin’s career.
-Does anything change here with menopausal/peri-menopausal women.
-The importance of resistance training with aggressive dieting.
-And much more
