3 years goes so fast! 🇿🇦🇬🇧

Mark Manson once wrote, “Who you are is defined by the values you are willing to struggle for.”

And I think these last three years have really taught me that.

Moving countries, leaving behind family, friends and everything familiar, and starting over hasn’t always been easy.

There have been some incredible highs, but also some really difficult lows. Moments of questioning decisions, missing people terribly, struggling with my mental health and trying to find my feet in a completely new country.

But there’s also been so much growth, so many opportunities, new friendships, experiences and memories.

I think two things can be true at once. You can absolutely love the life you’re building while still missing the one you left behind.

Life is always going to come with challenges. I suppose it’s about choosing the ones that are worth it.🫶🏻 And of course having the most incredible husband & best friend makes it even better @_mike_smith88 😘

I recently started the @macnutrition diploma in advanced nutrition science and I’m already getting so much value out of it. It’s exceeding my expectations. The mentoring lab is an incredible resource to go into the subjects that matter to you in depth. I find myself going onto it any time I have free time with excitement.

Why MNU? Short courses just didn’t seem like enough to truely learn and feel confident in advising future clients. We get to dive deep into evidence based practice with credible resources.

I’m excited to share my journey and understand the ‘why’ behind a lot of the specialist diets I already cook for my clients. Although jumping into subjects like bio chemistry and statistics again has been a shock 😮😅

Been quite quiet on socials over the last couple of weeks, there’s been a lot happening behind the scenes…

Huge news is my MNU exams officially done!

13 months of studying & I genuinely feel like my brain has just emptied into the fucking recycling bin😅🙃

I’ve honestly loved doing it, I feel like I’ve learned a lot & am continuing to do so through MNU despite the exams being done the learning never stops!

The timing also coincided with a couple of other pretty big things in life, so I’m probably feeling the comedown from all of it at once.

Very happy it’s done & I’m Very proud I did it.

Although now comes the horrible bit where there’s absolutely fuck all I can do except wait for the results😬😅

Luckily life has provided a few other sizeable distractions👀

More on that later, but for now I’m back & aiming to be more active on socials again.

For a few years now, I've been found a real interest in learning more about nutrition and how we can properly fuel our bodies. This year, I finally decided to stop just reading about it and actually do something.

After a lot of research, I found MNU, an evidence-based course that's producing some of the best nutrition professionals in the industry.

So - something I haven’t shared yet - I’m doing a nutrition qualification! 😱 I’ve been thinking about this for a while as I’ve struggled with my weight, hormones and nutrition for a few years now and been rebounding after cuts for competition. I want to finally have the knowledge behind me to manage this, and once I’m qualified would love to help others struggling with the same issues I am. I’ll be needing a few people to work with at some point so watch this space if you’d be interested in some free nutrition coaching!!

I chose MNU as it is evidence based, Im also currently working with Hannah @440coaching who is managing my nutrition so have some sound experience in my corner to learn from and you won’t get any of your Instagram /TikTok thin-fluencer shite pseudoscience from me. But you might get some made up words which is a new skill these days thanks to perimenopause 🤪
Maybe that’s why I love the humour of these T-shirts I received in my enrolment pack 😂

Another reason I chose MNU is that it’s proper exams with a graduation in a years time, not just an online course you click through in a couple months, resit the test as many times as you need to get your certificate and forget everything you learned!

I know I’m a glutton for punishment but If I’m doing this I’m doing it the right way! I want to know this stuff! And you get some post nominals once you graduate - how cool is that 😊

I’ve also got something else in the pipeline and will share in due course and set up a separate account further down the line, but for now I’ll be sharing my MNU journey on here as it’s no doubt also going to be a big part of my powerlifting journey.

Apparently I wasn’t finished learning… 😂

I’ve officially gone back to studying nutrition with @macnutrition, and there’s a very deliberate reason I chose MNU.

My original training with the Institute for Integrative Nutrition introduced me to Primary and Secondary Food.

Primary Food is everything that nourishes us beyond what’s on our plate. Secondary Food is the food we actually eat.

Since then, I’ve gone much deeper into that first part through coaching, yoga, breathwork, hypnotherapy and now counselling.

But I wanted the same depth when it came to nutrition.

That’s why I chose MNU. I want a stronger understanding of nutrition science, physiology, research and evidence-based practice alongside everything I’ve already learned.

Because we don’t make food choices in a vacuum.

We might also be stressed, grieving, exhausted, overwhelmed or simply trying to fit one more bloody thing into an already very full life.

Knowing what to do and being able to do it are two very different things.

Ultimately, I want to provide whole-person support, while being really clear about where my scope ends and someone else’s begins.

So this is the next piece of the puzzle. 🧩

And judging by the amount of chemistry I’ve already had to learn, MNU has absolutely understood the assignment. 🫠😂

Thankfully Mum has appointed herself Head of MNU Merch, so morale is high.

Follow along. I’ll be sharing what I learn, what challenges what I thought I knew, and probably quite a few “what on earth does THAT mean?” moments. 😂

O prehrani danes kroži ogromno mnenj — pogosto podanih kot dejstva. In ker je postala tako čustvena tema, se mi zdi še toliko pomembneje, da znamo ločiti osebna prepričanja od znanstvenih dokazov in objektivnih podatkov.

Prav zato sem se odločila za študij pri @macnutrition, svetovno priznanem, na znanstvenih dokazih temelječem izobraževanju s področja prehrane.

Veselim se vsega, kar se bom naučila — in predvsem tega, da bom lahko novo znanje delila z vami v svojih vsebinah in receptih. Še več uporabnih informacij, ki vam bodo pomagale razumeti ne samo, kaj izbrati, ampak tudi zakaj. ✨

This week’s MNU lecture was probably the first one where I thought...

Right. I’m definitely back studying again 😂

Research methods.

I’ll be honest, it wasn’t the most enjoyable lecture so far.

There was a lot to take in and I had to watch parts of it a few times just to get my head around it.

But I completely understand why it matters.

I say this to clients all the time - the things that actually move the needle usually aren’t the sexy things.

They’re the boring fundamentals.

This felt like the academic version of that.

If I want to get better at reading research, understanding what it actually tells us and forming my own opinions, then I need to understand the stuff that underpins it first.

So this week was about different types of research, how they’re designed, their strengths and limitations, and how much weight you can realistically put on the conclusions.

Observational studies.

Randomised controlled trials.

Systematic reviews.

Meta-analyses.

And a fair bit of terminology that initially looked like gobbledygook!

What stood out most was how easy it is to find “a study” and use it to make a claim sound credible.

But unless you understand how it was designed, who was studied, how things were measured, the limitations and whether it actually applies to real life, the reference alone doesn’t tell you much.

There’s nearly always context and uncertainty to consider, and research rarely gives us 100% certainty.

The homework was creating our own glossary of research terms and methods.

Not exactly rock and roll but actually really useful.

It’s given me a handy reference point for all the terminology that’s going to keep coming up over the next 13 months.

Not my favourite week so far.

Definitely not the sexiest.

But probably one of the foundations that matters most.

Looking forward to getting stuck into more of the science this week though.
