Dear little Marv,

It’s been 30 years.

Thirty years since you left Kenya with Mom, Dad Emma, Donna and Diana, carrying more weight than a little boy could possibly understand.

It’s 1996, and you don’t know it yet, but Canada is going to become home.

Not immediately, though.

There will be days when you wonder if there is a place here for someone who looks like you.

There will be classrooms, soccer fields, workplaces and spaces where the colour of your skin seems to enter the room before you do.

There will be words you wish you could unhear.

Moments you wish you could forget.

Times when you’ll make yourself smaller just to fit into spaces that were never designed with you in mind.

There will be times when you question where you belong.

But little man…

keep going.

Because one day, you’re going to find something beautiful in the middle of all of it.

You’re going to find sport and in doing so you’ll find and build communities like you never imagined.

You’ll find a ball at your feet and slowly begin finding yourself.

You’ll find teammates who become brothers and sisters. Coaches who see something in you. Communities that give you a place to stand.

And somewhere along the way, sport will stop simply being somewhere you go to belong.

It will become somewhere you help others belong.

That pain you feel when someone makes you feel different?

Remember it.

Because one day it will become empathy.

Those moments when you feel invisible?

Remember them.

Because one day they will teach you to notice the person standing quietly at the edge of the room.

Those times when you wish someone would stand beside you?

Remember them too.

Because one day, you’ll become that person for someone else.

And here’s the part you’re really not going to believe.

Thirty years from now, you’ll be helping shape the future of sport in the country you once wondered whether you belonged in.

You’ll coach.

You’ll lead.

You’ll advocate.

You’ll have conversations about racism, representation, inclusion and belonging with people who have the power to change things.

You’ll help open doors that weren’t always open for people who looked like you. by @marvinho91011

Thanks to @megsapixel @csiatlantic and @support4sport for capturing the day/moments that I finally conquered my imposter syndrome and realized the value of being your authentic self this past African Heritage Month 🙏🏾🖤

Thanks for allowing black coaches to feel the support in an evolving sports community and capturing photos of us in our #HappyPlace

Thanks to sports for teaching me how to walk, @hfxwanderersfc @suburbanfc @halifaxdunbracksoccer @uniteddfc @hcusoccer @hcumenschampionship @funsports.fun @soccer.nova.scotia for creating a space for me to learn how to jog, so that I could eventually run!

Finally ready to be a leader that is worth following.

Arsenal travel away to The City Ground to take on Forrest after an impressive 3-0 win in the UCL in midweek.

Saka looked like he was back to his best after an international break and a cameo off the bench on Tuesday, and he will look to continue that form going into this match with a busy October and November schedule which includes a trip to Bayern this coming week in the UCL.

The players will need to be focused for this match and not looking beyond the fixture with Bayern on the horizon if they want to collect all 3 points.

Arrive early to get your brunch orders before kickoff and make sure to reserve a table if you’re coming with friends.

The Arsenal are back in the UCL after a resilient comeback 2-1 win vs Leeds in the EPL thanks to goals by Calafiori and Bruno with the winner off the bench.

We look to keep the momentum going at the Emirates 🏟️ and collect maximum points before travelling to Bayern Munich at the Allianz in our next UCL fixture on Wednesday October 21.

We banter a lot and I know you’re struggling with the Manchester City charges/situation but I want you to know how much you mean to me and a lot of people.

You are a big teddy bear who is sometimes misunderstood by those who don’t know you. But anyone who knows you, knows you would go to war for anyone you care about.

I hope people know this is so much more than building a stadium.

Today could be a day that can and should go down in history!

Councillor Tony Mancini nailed it with his words today to the naysayers speaking about noise, traffic and construction issues captured in this video.

Derek Martin’s proposal to invest approximately $100 million of private funding into transforming the Wanderers Grounds and Maybank Field represents an incredible opportunity for sport, recreation and community in HRM.

A permanent home for the Halifax Wanderers. Infrastructure that can support the Halifax Tides. New and improved spaces for community sport and recreation. And a vision that works alongside neighbours like the Bengal Lancers and Wanderers Lawn Bowling Club to make these historic spaces better for everyone.

Since COVID changed our world in 2020, we’ve seen tremendous growth in sport and recreation but our infrastructure hasn’t always grown with it. Fields are always fully booked and programs have waitlists. More kids and adults want opportunities to play, coach, connect and belong, but we simply need more places for that to happen.

That’s why I believe this investment could be life changing for so many present and future generations.
Because sport is not just entertainment.

Sport is community.
Sport is connection.
Sport is belonging.
Sport is physical and mental health.

At a time when our communities are confronting serious challenges around isolation, mental health and pressure on our healthcare system, we should also be investing in the places and programs that help people connect, move, build relationships and feel like they belong.

We often talk about bringing our community together through sport. Here is an opportunity to build some of the infrastructure that can actually help us do it.
