Sometimes it’s easier to leave the TV room and immerse yourself in the Sarah J. Maas universe than it is to watch another orange-and-blue wearing hometown team break The City’s heart…again. But then you miss a gritty, stunning, record-setting comeback and you’re sad. But only for a minute! Because then you get to watch all. the. replays. AND see the disbelief on Jerry Seinfeld’s face on repeat and your heart is full. #GoKnicks

P.S. AND because your job is awesome, the week also delivered a behind-the-scenes look at the inner workings of @hatchshowprint at the @countrymusichof . The best of humanity twice in one week. #GoHatch taken in New York City by @marydangermancini

The knuckleball pitch is so unpredictable that even top @MLB catchers struggle to get it in their mitt.

So when Cy Young Award–winning pitcher and Nashvillian R.A. Dickey visited the studio, he politely turned down Blake’s request to throw one, probably saving him from a black eye (or worse).

But he did give a demonstration…which was much, much safer.

One hundred years ago, John Scopes taught evolution in a Dayton, Tennessee, high school. A few months later he was tried and convicted of breaking the law. The town is marking the centennial with a special celebration, July 11-19th. I visited Dayton recently to learn about the legacy of the trial and produced this feature, which is part of a full episode of @thisisnashville_wpln: The Scopes Trial at 100.

@bob_mancini and Laura’s kid just signed with the New York Rangers. It’s been so fun to watch @victormancinii grow up on skates. It’s so great that all the focused hard work he and his parents put into nurturing his natural athletic talent has paid off. This is truly an amazing accomplishment and extraordinary on so many levels. Congratulations, Victor, Bob, and Laura! 🫎🍎🗽

And there’s a history here. When Victor’s Grandpa Remo was a kid growing up in Brooklyn, the NYR were his team. He cheered for them and he and his friends bought tickets in the cheap seats at MSG to see them play. I’m sure he brought my mother to a game or two when they were dating. Hockey is baked into our DNA. New York Rangers hockey is the reason. And even though we took a detour to Nassau Coliseum for a couple of decades, we’re all back where we belong now. #LFGR taken in Madison Square Garden by @marydangermancini

From the Nashville Business Journal (behind a paywall link in bio): Nashville's "...indie venues where musicians get their start are at risk of being priced out."

As someone who opened an independent venue on a shoestring budget three decades ago, this all makes too much sense. It's behind a paywall so to summarize: market challenges, real estate prices, and real estate development have made it extremely hard to run an independent music venue and almost impossible to start a new one. A couple of thoughts and then I'll share some quotes in the comments.

1) All sizes matter. Nashville's venue ecosystem shouldn't be either/or but yes/and. All size venues are important and necessary and they all need "open spaces, good locations and lots of parking" to thrive. Yes, yes, and yes.

2) There are challenges we can't even imagine so ask the people in the scrum. A study of Nashville's independent venues with owner/operator input is ongoing, funded by American Rescue Plan Act funds (approved by Metro Council last year), the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Nashville Convention and Visitors Corp. Findings are scheduled to be published in the Spring of 2024.

3) Investment in independent music venues is crucial for musicians AND the city. Music venues focus on artist development and they can help budding musicians get their start. Equally important, I must add, are the communities formed around these shared spaces. Independent music venues encourage a do-it-yourself ethic and support unfettered creativity so even non-budding professional musicians and attendees can find and use their voices in ways that allow them to reach their full potential. What more could we want than this crucial foundational support for the people who live in a city on the cusp of so much change? (Please feel free to swap out "Independent music venues." for "art galleries," "studio/rehearsal/maker spaces," "black box theaters," etc.) ❤️ taken in Drkmttr Collective by @marydangermancini
