The knuckleball pitch is so unpredictable that even top @MLB catchers struggle to get it in their mitt. So when Cy Young Award–winning pitcher and Nashvillian R.A. Dickey visited the studio, he politely turned down Blake’s request to throw one, probably saving him from a black eye (or worse). But he did give a demonstration…which was much, much safer. 🎧 Listen to the full interview at thisisnashville.org or on our podcast feed.

📻 @thisisnashville_wpln had myself, @mkshphrd & @jeremefrey on to talk about Alternative Holiday Music Traditions - specifically the YK Holiday Sampler we released in 2024! Fitting to have Mike & Jereme on the show as the @towerdefensetn song inspired the entire endeavor. We had a great time chatting with @flakebarmer about that origin story, as well as insights on many of the specific songs. Thank you @marydangermancini for having us! Streaming online everywhere now!

“Lucy’s Record Shop on Church Street in Nashville, Tennessee, 1993.” - In the mid-‘90s, there weren’t many reasons to drive at night down Church Street in Midtown Nashville. But if you did, you’d probably see the “Lucy’s kids.” Back then, the teenage misfits of Middle Tennessee – punk rockers, metalheads, goths, and all other brands of high school outcasts – turned the 1700 block of a largely deserted strip into their oasis. That was thanks to Lucy’s Record Shop, a store and all-ages music venue that ran from 1992 to 1998. Lucy’s would welcome its share of nationally known indie acts over the years, but more importantly, it let the kids in the crowd take the stage, too. If you and your friends knew a few chords, there wasn’t much standing in the way of you booking your own show there. Mary Mancini was the owner of Lucy’s – named after her pet Weimaraner, who would calmly roam the shop while kids moshed in the back room. Along with show bookers Donnie and April Kendall, she’d be the rare adult figure at the door, stamping hands and collecting the $5 cover charge. More recently, Mancini was the Chair of the Tennessee Democratic Party from 2015 to 2021. It was through her pivot into politics that she realized how much Lucy’s meant to those who were there. When she ran for State Senate in 2014, Lucy’s alums organized a campaign fundraiser with a roster of reunited bands. In April 2022, she launched the Lucy’s Record Shop podcast. In each episode, she reconnects with former Lucy’s kids, who share their memories of the club and the ways it empowered them and shaped their future. In the last 24: I saw @shanemcanally try out the one man comedy show he’s developing, artfully & naturally weaving tall tales of where he comes from around the country hits that they inspired; went on @thisisnashville_wpln w/ @ericdholt & a solid crew of others who are working to build up the biz around hip-hop & R&B in Nashville; contributed a feature on one of my fave musical minds @moses to @hereandnowradio ; teamed up w/ @melaniepeanut & @hoka for an @eastnasty4life run #justliving

Great Johnny Bragg panel! Michael Gray brilliantly hosting Misti Bragg (Johnny's daughter) for the family insight, Bob Clement (son of Gov. Frank Clement) for the government connection, and writer/historian Colin Escott with the musical knowledge! Congrats on a new Johnny Bragg release of old tapes that family rediscovered a few years ago! Some fun final pics of producer Mary Mancini for WPLN! Bob Clement, dapper and young as always, and a fun informational exchange between Brian Mansfield and Colin! What a world in this town! It was a little drizzly last Sat so I actually did walk in the rain downtown, but big thx to Mary and Kurt for the lift home! Many many thx to my archive mentor Olivia Beaudry, from Center for Popular Music, for the tkt to the event!
