We lost a great one today. Ken Hackman, known as the “Godfather of Air Force Photography” has passed on. I’ve known Ken for many years and he holds a very special place in my heart. Along with everyone who knew him, I loved him very much and will miss him terribly. Godspeed my dear friend.

Today is Veterans Day. The idea is to acknowledge the service of people who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. While it is important to recognize those who have served it is important to remember that many of these veterans are suffering with physical and mental health issues that they incurred during their service. For over a decade I have reported on sexual assault in America’s military. To date, there have been Congressional hearings, Pentagon studies, scholarly reports and legislation put forth to lawmakers to address sexual assault in America’s military but currently and historically, no matter how often we speak truth to power, sexual abuse, harassment and rape continue to be a plague on the military and our society as a whole.

TEAM LEADER HIGHLIGHTS
We’re honored to welcome alum (1990) @maryfcalvert Mary Calvert as a Team Leader at this year’s Eddie Adams Workshop.

Mary is dedicated to using photography as a tool for meaningful social change, focusing on under-reported and neglected gender-based human rights issues. In recent years, she has turned her lens toward the relegation and abuse of women and men in the U.S. Armed Forces—a body of work that was a finalist for the 2020 Pulitzer Prize in Feature Photography and has earned international recognition.

Her powerful storytelling has won numerous awards, including honors from the World Press Photo Contest and the Cliff Edom New America Award, and has been supported by grants from Getty Images and the Alexia Foundation. Mary is also a 2017–2018 John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellow in Photography.

At the Workshop, Mary brings her passion for shining light on overlooked stories and her commitment to truth, justice, and impact—guiding the next generation of storytellers to use their craft as a force for change.

I was doing some housekeeping on my file cabinet and look what I found in the folder marked "Writing." This essay: "The Missed Moment: A photographer looks back on the historic picture he didn't get," ran in the Washington Post Magazine on June 17, 2012. In it David Burnett talks about the day in June of 1972 when AP photographer Nick Ut made his famous picture of Kim Phuc. Do not miss the fourth page.⁣

On Monday Robert F. Kennedy Jr., U.S. health secretary and vaccine skeptic, abruptly fired all 17 members of the Centers for Disease Control and Protection vaccine advisory board. This was a move that he said would restore the American people’s trust in vaccines. Hmmm…All I could think about when I read the news coverage of this was my family’s experience with polio. My father's younger sister Claire was a charming and spunky little girl who loved to ride her bike and play with her friends. After a trip to the circus, she and my father contracted polio. His was a mild case and he fully recovered but Claire's case was far worse and she died when she was just 12 years old; years before the polio vaccine came out and saved millions of lives. This was a devastating loss for my family, pain that no one should have to endure.⁣

International vaccine drives in the news today...⁣
Boys wait their turn to receive two drops of polio vaccine at a stationary vaccine sitein their neighborhood near Kano, Nigeria. Polio vaccinators fanned out across the Fagge Government Area, in Ward Kwciri, looking for children under the age of 5 on Day One of the Immunization Plus Day, sponsored by UNICEF.⁣
