“This Shrine speaks to us with the voice of all America, with the voice of all the sons and daughters of America, who have come here from the various countries…[and] came together around the heart of a Mother they all had in common.” – Pope John Paul II

Today marks the 59th anniversary of the dedication of the Mary, Queen of Missions Chapel, which depicts Mary and the faithful from around the world in brilliant mosaics and carvings.

The Chapel of Mary, Queen of Missions is inscribed with the following prayer, which is taken from the writings of Saint Eugene de Mazenod:

“Holy Mary, our Mother.

Today, each day and in our last hour we entrust ourselves entirely to your loving and singular care. We place in your hands: our entire hope and happiness, our every anxiety and difficulty, our whole lives. May our every endeavor be directed and guided according to the Will of Your Son, which is your will, by the aid of your prayers and special favor with God. Amen.”

From the very beginning, the National Shrine’s bond with the papacy has been a defining part of its history, marked by a special connection to the Successors of Saint Peter.

On the Anniversary of the Elevation of the National Shrine to the Rank of Minor Basilica by Saint Pope John Paul II in 1990, our 12:10pm Mass today was offered for Pope Leo XIV ahead of his surgery tomorrow in Rome.

As was prayed in the Prayer after Communion:

“Lord: by the power of this mystery, strengthen your Church in unity and charity and, as you have entrusted your servant Leo with the office of shepherd, grant him always salvation and protection, together with the flock entrusted to his care. Through Christ our Lord.”
