The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception is the largest Roman Catholic church in the United States and North America, and one of the ten largest churches in the world — and most people who live in Washington DC have never been inside it. Construction began in 1920 and continued through 1959, when architects Maginnis and Walsh of Boston chose a Romanesque-Byzantine style to achieve an original design that was “sunk in tradition yet distinctively American” — a national Catholic monument built to symbolise the faith and love of the United States for its patroness, the Blessed Virgin Mary. Its massive superstructure is home to over 80 chapels and oratories that relate to the peoples, cultures, and traditions that make up the fabric of the Catholic faith and the cultural mosaic of the nation, and it houses the largest collection of contemporary ecclesiastical art on earth.

Walking through the Basilica, 82 ornate chapels flank the sides of the upper church and crypt — each one dedicated to a different cultural expression of Mary from communities across the globe, from Our Lady of Guadalupe to Our Lady of Częstochowa, making this single building one of the most quietly extraordinary expressions of human cultural diversity anywhere in the world. The shrine’s ceiling bears one of the largest and most intricate mosaic renderings of Jesus ever created — “Christ in Majesty” — made up of over three million individual tiles covering 3,610 square feet directly above the nave. Since its dedication in 1959, this Byzantine-Romanesque shrine has welcomed over one million visitors a year, among them Pope John Paul II, Pope Benedict XVI, and Mother Teresa. It is completely free to enter, open every day, and sitting in the Brookland neighbourhood of northeast Washington DC within walking distance of a Metro station.
