To be perfectly honest, I have never been very fond of cut flowers.

People kindly give me bouquets from time to time, but they always leave me with mixed feelings. Once a flower has been cut, I cannot help feeling that its life has been brought to an early end.

I would much rather it had been left to swell into bud, bloom in its own time, and finally fade away when it was ready. I suspect the florists would have a few stern words for me if I admitted that too loudly, so I usually keep the thought to myself.

Whenever I receive flowers, I become rather obsessive. I change the water again and again, hoping to keep them looking cheerful for just a little longer.

Perhaps that is why there are so few vases in our house.

Then I came across this flamingo vase by Masako Inoue.

It is beautiful even without flowers. The bold composition has a life of its own. And somehow I found myself thinking that, if you did fill it with flowers, the lively flamingos might lend them a little extra spirit.

That was the moment I realised this was no longer simply a vase.

It was a work of art.
