Many people say they would love to fly like a bird. How wonderfully free it must feel, they imagine. I’ll pass, thank you. I’ve been afraid of heights since I was a child. Even at heights where a fall would do little harm, my legs turn to jelly and I get this peculiar, queasy feeling around my backside. Long escalators are out, as are monorails. Even sitting in a car, all it takes is someone saying, “We’re crossing a railway bridge now,” and I start to feel uneasy. Flying through the air is quite out of the question. I’m not particularly fond of the word “take a bird’s eye view”, either. It means looking at the bigger picture from a little above, but given the choice, I’d rather stay close to the ground, getting my hands dirty and grappling with people at close quarters. I often wonder, then, what birds see from high above. Do we humans look like tiny creatures scurrying about in all directions? Or are birds so busy looking after themselves that they haven’t the time to bother with us? The bald eagle depicted by Masako Inoue is not the stereotypical bird we tend to imagine. So large that it spills over the edges of the square plate, it makes you forget all about the sky. What comes across instead is a sharp, powerful creature that hunts its prey and fights to defend its territory. Artist link in Bio. #masakoinoue #michekogalerie #ceramicart #kutani #japaneseceramics

To be perfectly honest, I have never been very fond of cut flowers. People kindly give me bouquets from time to time, but they always leave me with mixed feelings. Once a flower has been cut, I cannot help feeling that its life has been brought to an early end. I would much rather it had been left to swell into bud, bloom in its own time, and finally fade away when it was ready. I suspect the florists would have a few stern words for me if I admitted that too loudly, so I usually keep the thought to myself. Whenever I receive flowers, I become rather obsessive. I change the water again and again, hoping to keep them looking cheerful for just a little longer. Perhaps that is why there are so few vases in our house. Then I came across this flamingo vase by Masako Inoue. It is beautiful even without flowers. The bold composition has a life of its own. And somehow I found myself thinking that, if you did fill it with flowers, the lively flamingos might lend them a little extra spirit. That was the moment I realised this was no longer simply a vase. It was a work of art. #masakoinoue #michekogalerie #kutaniware #contemporaryceramics #japaneseceramics

Masako Inoue’s tea bowl exemplifies a bold and highly physical approach to ceramic surface. The technique she employs, scratching through a dark glaze layer to reveal the lighter ground beneath, is commonly known as “sgraffito.” While traditionally associated with carving through slip, its application on glaze produces a particularly sharp, dynamic line quality. In Inoue’s work, these incised marks evoke the rhythm of fur and musculature, giving the tiger an intense sense of movement and vitality. The motif of the tiger carries a rich history in Japanese art. As tigers are not native to Japan, they were historically depicted through Chinese paintings, imported skins, or imaginative interpretation. This led to a unique visual tradition in which observation and invention coexist. Tigers often appear not merely as animals, but as symbolic beings, embodying strength, protection, and spiritual presence. Artists such as Ito Jakuchu and Nagasawa Rosetsu developed highly expressive and idiosyncratic tiger imagery, where brushwork itself became a vehicle for life force. Inoue’s work extends this lineage into a contemporary, sculptural context. Instead of brush and ink, she uses incision, transforming gesture into a physical act embedded in clay and glaze. The tiger unfolds inside the tea bowl, activating the interior space as a site of encounter. As the viewer looks into the vessel, the act of viewing becomes intimate, almost confrontational. In this way, Inoue reinterprets a traditional motif through materiality, gesture, and form, bridging historical imagination with a distinctly contemporary sensibility. #masakoinoue #michekogalerie #kutani #contemporaryceramics

9/20 @mas_ainoue 【Exhibition Information】 Masako Inoue  Exhibition –Choju Ezu– 2025/8/30-9/7 10:00-17:00 Venue:Enishira/Kanazawa We are pleased to announce the solo exhibition“Choju Ezu”by Kutani ware artist Masako Inoue. Using a technique called“Sgraffito”, which is rare in Kutani ware, the artist creates bold compositions with a black base color, resulting in works that are vibrant and lively. Although the technique may appear bold at first glance, the actual work is delicate, and the artist's style is characterized by the addition of gold and platinum glaze accents. This exhibition will feature approximately 60 pieces, including vases, decorative plates, lidded containers, matcha bowls, sake cups, and other works in sizes unique to a solo exhibition, capturing the charming forms of various birds and animals, including dragons, one of her signature motifs. We hope you will take this opportunity to visit the exhibition. #井上雅子 #九谷焼 #上絵掻き落とし #MasakoInoue #Kutaniware #Sgraffito #縁煌 #enishira #kogei
