Earlier this Summer, I booked a supporting role in an Indie Feature - my first time playing a mom after becoming a mom. I used every opportunity in this tape to be inspired by my relationship to motherhood, my son, and my own mom. I pulled from every aspect of motherhood available to make this as specific as I could. Not because of any kind of pressure, but simply because that’s what I find the most enjoyable when creating a character. I took a lot of creative liberties, because they felt rich and real to me. In the end, I had two takes - one close to the script, and other more in the direction of what I was inspired by. There were a few more rounds with notes and redirects before I booked, but what I feel helped, and will always champion for myself and my clients, is authenticity and specificity. The tiny little details are what make a scene play in 3D. Don’t get bogged down by doing it “right” or looking for what casting wants. Give yourself permission to feel inspired. Sides are the jumping off point. Use story and specificity to fill in the rest.

Knocked out two great takes for a costar role with @thebrandonconti . Costars can be tricky but we used some props and improv to get into the world of the scene and then easing into the scene was instant!

Amazing work from @aarondallavilla for a very meaty and word heavy Guest Star. We focused on getting the tone and energy right to build this character. Once that was set, the lines came easily.

So fun to read with @kimballfarley for a recurring. We worked with his natural energy and essence to bring the character to life in a truly authentic and entertaining tape!

Had @ruslan_verkhovsky back in the studio cracking me up. Looks tough, but he’s amazing at comedy. We just sharpened all the beats and had a killer take in no time.

New client Jenna reading for two roles in the same scene! What a fun way to experience a scene.
Tip : if you ever feel stuck or want to dig deeper, try rehearsing the scene from the other character’s point of view. You may get clarity on how your own role is affecting others in the scene.

“Right and Wrong” do not exist. Only “more or less effective”.

For those coming to tape in person, we can now watch playback on a monitor! Featured here is @redredstorm in a scene from her callback that we chose to shoot “on location” (sand backdrop) with some added camera pans. An amazingly creative session all around! by @mashatapes
