📈 Jason, 3:07:32 to 3:03:09 in the marathon!

🏆 He ran 3:03:09 in the marathon, a 4 minute and 23 second PR!

⚡️ We executed the plan, practiced his fueling and ran clean workouts. The fitness was there, and he came very close to sub 3.

💡 Sometimes racing doesn’t go the way you want. Missing a goal doesn’t mean you didn’t progress. One more solid training cycle and he finishes the job. Proud of this guy!

⏰ 4 minutes and 23 seconds faster in 3 months.

🐢 I ran my SLOWEST marathon off 100 mile weeks and my fastest off 58.

💡 Your mileage number is personal, and the quicker we find what your body responds well to, the quicker we get the results we’re looking for.

🏁 Mohit. 4:08:00 to 3:58:39 in the marathon!

🎯 Mohit came in chasing sub 4 after running 4:08 and missing it for over a year.

⏱️ We didn’t have unlimited time. Busy schedule, career changes, family. So we went all in on quality, fewer run days, and more intentional work.

💪🏽 He stayed consistent, and in Tokyo it all came together. 3:58:39.

🤯 9 minutes and 21 seconds faster in 4 months.

👉🏽 If you’re doing the work and not getting faster, DM me “RACE” and I’ll show you how we help our athletes make jumps like Mohit! taken in Tokyo, Japan by @mason.adonis

🩸 If you still don’t really understand THRESHOLD, this might help you apply it to your training!

💡 Simply put, threshold is about getting better at clearing lactate. So the job is to run right under the pace where it starts piling up, and stay there long enough to push that pace back.

✍🏽 Save this for your next threshold day and send it to the friend who’s trying to figure this out too!

🔥 Comment “CLOSE” and I’ll send you my top 3 long run workouts for closing strength!

😮‍💨 After mile 20, TIRED is the only way you’ll ever run your goal pace. So if that’s where your marathon falls apart and you didn’t go out too fast, it’s usually closing strength and your fitness is fine.

📈 We build it with marathon specific work… around goal pace, through it and below it, deep in a long run when your legs are already under fatigue.

🏁 In honor on the Chicago Marathon this weekend, I bring you Arnel. 3:52:00 to 3:11:44 in the marathon!

3️⃣ When Arnel and I started working together, sub 3 was already on the radar.

🏋🏽‍♂️ We focused on half marathon specific work, dialed in his strength training and turned a 1:31 half into a launching pad for marathon prep.

6️⃣ In 6 months he went from 3:52 to 3:11:44. That’s 40 minutes and 16 seconds faster.

🤯 40 minutes and 16 seconds faster in 6 months. He recently went on to break 3 hours on his own after graduating from @recastrunning!

✋🏽signs you’re about to run the same marathon again:

👉🏽 I'm not saying this from a high horse, because I've done it. I went from a 2:57 to a 4:06 thinking the answer was more of what I was already doing. Here's what I look for now with my athletes, and honestly with myself.

1️⃣ Your plan for this build is your last build plus more miles.

This was me. I was running 80 to 90 miles a week with one week that hit 100, and I walked at mile 18. I was so tired from the miles that I couldn’t run my workouts well, and the workouts were the part that was supposed to make me faster. About a year later my biggest week was 58 and I ran 2:52.

2️⃣ Your 5K hasn’t moved in two years.

I think a lot of us skip this one because the 5K feels like a different sport. But if your goal marathon pace is sitting too close to the fastest you can run, it’s going to feel hard by mile 10 no matter how many long runs you’ve done. Get faster first, then stretch it out.

3️⃣ Every long run is one easy pace.

Then the first time you try to run fast on tired legs is mile 20 of the race. Closing is a skill and the long run is where you practice it, with fast finishes, mile repeats in the back half, and pace that changes on purpose.

4️⃣ Your hard days are 9’s and 10’s (on the effort scale).

You win Tuesday and then Thursday is a wash because you’re still cooked. I keep my athletes around an 8 out of 10, because a PR comes from stacking weeks of quality workouts and you can’t stack what you can’t recover from.

5️⃣ Race morning will be the first time you try any of it.

The gels, the breakfast, the pace, the plan for mile 20. If the race is the first rehearsal, you already know how that goes. Nothing new on race day.

If you saw yourself in two or more of these, the good news is that discipline was never your problem, and a build is a lot easier to change than a work ethic.

3️⃣ Ryan came to me with a 3:04 and one goal, sub 3!

✏️ He’s a full time student, so piling on miles was never an option. We got more out of the miles he already had.

🤯 Along the way he ran a 1:21:38 half. Then he went to OC and ran 2:54:13.

📈 9 minutes and 47 seconds faster in 3 months.

🏁 If you keep running the same marathon time, comment “RACE” and I’ll DM you. taken in Orange County, California by @mason.adonis

🤯 Everyone covered the 5:17 cutoff. Almost nobody covered the RANDOM DRAW!

About 1,000 runners who hit their Boston standard but missed the cutoff got a bib through a drawing this year. A nice little 2nd chance for runners who technically hit their standard!

However, applications were about the same as last year and the cutoff still got 43 seconds harder, so I don’t see this getting easier for 2028.

You HAVE to build a cushion, if you don’t want to get stuck refreshing your email with your fingers crossed. Save this for your next build and send it to the friend chasing a BQ.

Comment “RACE” and I’ll show you how my athletes build that cushion! 🏁 by @mason.adonis

If you fade after mile 20, I’d look at your 5K before I’d look at your pacing. For example, a 3:30 marathon is right around 8 minute pace, and to hold that for 26 miles you need roughly a 21:50 5K or faster behind it. When goal pace sits that close to the fastest you can run, starting slower won’t save the last 10K.

🏁 Comment “RACE”, send me your last marathon time and your weekly miles, and I’ll tell you if speed is what’s holding you back! by @mason.adonis
