LEADVILLE TRAIL 100 | 29:02 100 miles. 14200+ feet of climbing and somewhere out there, a version of pain I didn’t know existed until yesterday. Leadville was amazing to me. To my crew, pacers, coach, friends, and family, you were the reason I even made it to the start line of my dreams. I’d spent the last two months battling injuries and emotional stress, but I leaned on them, and they showed up huge to get me there. Mile 78. My IT bands were gone. Not sore but gone. Every step through Outward Bound felt like my legs were being taken apart from the inside. Nothing compares to what mile 78 felt like. I thought about quitting. Standing in that aid station with 22 miles still between me and the finish, part of me was already building the excuse. It would’ve been so easy. Four years ago, I would have stopped. I know that about myself, and I’m not ashamed of it because that person got me here. But he’s not who showed up yesterday. I learned more about who I am in those last 22 miles than in years of comfortable training. Pain is loud, but it isn’t the final word. The towel stays on the ground if you decide it does. Ultra-Trail Australia UTA100 | 17:21 | Buckle and Western States lottery ticket Mile 34, I thought my race was over. Severely dehydrated, kidneys in excruciating pain, every voice in my head telling me to drop. I sat in that suffering and had a choice listen, or move. I stood up and I passed every single person on the biggest stair section of the course while being in some of the worst pain of my life. I used to live a life of comfort. Of sleeping in and listening to the voice that says you’ve done enough today, take it easy, you’ve earned it. I burned that version of me to the ground and I calloused my mind. I went looking for the suffering inside these mountains because that’s where I find out who I actually am. 17 hours and 21 minutes. A lifetime of lessons packed into a single day. To everyone who doubted me, I hope you were watching. Semester at Sea showed me how big the world is and how human it becomes once you’re in it. Different cultures, different ideas of freedom, different ways of living but we are all sharing the same search for meaning. Voyage 136 was a community. Strangers turned into family, conversations turned into perspective, and moments turned into memories I’ll carry forever. The people on this ship pushed me, challenged me, and made this experience what it was. Somewhere along the way, this chapter helped me see what I want more clearly: who I want to be, how I want to live, and the kind of challenges I want to chase next.
