Mass General Brigham researchers joined partners from Perkins, families, advocates, and policymakers at the Massachusetts State House for Cerebral Visual Impairment (CVI) Awareness Day to raise awareness of one of the leading causes of childhood visual impairment.

Cerebral visual impairment (CVI) is a brain-based condition that affects how the brain processes visual information. Although children with CVI may have healthy eyes, they can still struggle to recognize faces, locate objects, and interpret the visual world around them. Yet many children are not identified until years after symptoms begin.

Researchers at Mass General Brigham for Children, led by Mohamed El-Dib, MD, are working to change that. In collaboration with Lacey Smith of Perkins School for the Blind, the team developed new guidelines to help clinicians identify infants at risk for CVI while they are still in the NICU, connect families with appropriate resources, and ensure children receive support during a critical period of brain development.

Together, research, education, and advocacy are helping advance earlier identification, intervention, and support for children with CVI and their families. Learn more about their research efforts at the link in our bio.

An additional collaborator on this work was Gena Heidary, MD, of Boston Children's Hospital. September marks Sickle Cell awareness month and this year we got an update on where Sickle Cell warriors stand in the battle against the disease.

Meet Kofi Mensah - a 31 year old Harvard Law School graduate living in Cambridge who’s battled the disease since birth. Despite it being a hereditary illness, he is the only member of his immediate family that has it.

Dealing with it became arduous and after receiving a double hip implant he knew something had to change.

Searching for solution brought him right to the door of Mass General Hospital. Here is his story.

Massachusetts has one of the highest reported rates of child maltreatment in the country.

@Massgovernor Maura Healey has proclaimed October 4th as TEN-4 Day in Massachusetts to stress the importance of recognizing concerning bruising and injuries on infants and young children and to keep nonaccidental injury at the forefront of each person’s mind when interacting with or treating injured children.

TEN-4-FACESp is an acronym for torso, ears, and neck, and specific areas of the face—the areas that are most commonly injured in children under 4 years of age who are experiencing physical abuse. For 14 months, Steve Bricker lived with pain so severe that lying flat on his back was the only way he could find relief.

After multiple treatments failed to help his sciatica, Steve turned to Mass General Brigham Spine Care. When he met Pat Bovonratwet, MD, he knew he was in good hands. Dr. Bovonratwet explained his options and recommended minimally invasive surgery to remove a synovial cyst pressing on the nerves in Steve’s lower back.

After surgery, Steve went home the same day. Within a few months, he was completely pain-free.

"I would love for people to see Steve's story and learn that they may be a candidate for these modern minimally invasive procedures," said Dr. Bovonratwet. "Spine surgery has advanced dramatically over the years. Operations that once required large incisions and a hospital stay can now, in select patients, be performed through an incision the size of a nickel or pencil tip, often allowing patients to return home the same day." by @massgeneralbrigham

For decades, Joe Castiglione has been one of the most familiar voices in Boston sports, calling @RedSox games for generations of fans. After retiring from broadcasting in 2024, he was looking forward to more time for family, golfing, bike rides and sunsets in Florida. Then he noticed a growing lump in his right thigh, and received an eventual diagnosis of a rare liposarcoma.

Joe’s care brought together specialists across Mass General Brigham Cancer Institute and Spaulding Rehabilitation, including Kevin Raskin, MD; Gregory Cote, MD, PhD; Kevin Liu, MD, DPhil; and Stephanie Pijanowski, PT, MSPT, CSRS. Through radiation, surgery and rehabilitation, Joe says what stood out most was the coordination, communication and individualized care he received. “They cover all the bases,” he says.

Today, Joe’s scans are clean, and he’s back to his favorite pastimes — he’s even called a few Red Sox games. He’s grateful for the Mass General Brigham teams who helped him round the bases along the way.

Last week we held our Recovery Month Celebration. J. Deanna Wilson, MD, MPH, Presidential Assistant Professor of Family Medicine and Community Health at the Perelman School of Medicine at @uofpenn gave our keynote address to 60 attendees, explaining how systems and policy shape addiction treatment and the ways they can be redesigned to create more equitable pathways to recovery. Attendees heard a panel discussion featuring members of our multidisciplinary addiction workforce. They shared how their diverse roles support people on their recovery journeys. At the end, we announced the four recipients of this year's Substance Use Disorder Champion Award, which recognizes staff members who are making a meaningful impact in their everyday work.

Following the celebration a few days later, a group of 22 staff from across the system represented Mass General Brigham at the @moarrecovery Recovery Day Rally and March at the Boston Common. This annual event seeks to honor recovery and the people who make it possible.

🎥🔬 Have you ever wondered what a day in the life of a postdoctoral research fellow looks like?

Step inside the Ragon Institute and meet Nicolás Gálvez Arriagada, PhD, a postdoctoral research fellow in the Balazs Lab, whose work is helping scientists better understand HIV and develop new ways to prevent and treat infectious diseases.

Nicolás studies how HIV evolves and adapts in the body, providing critical insights into why the virus remains so difficult to control. By investigating how HIV interacts with the immune system and evades its defenses, his research is helping advance strategies that could lead to more effective therapies and prevention approaches.

From designing experiments and analyzing data to collaborating with fellow researchers, Nicolás's work is part of a global effort to uncover new ways to outsmart one of the world's most challenging viruses.

Watch the video for a behind-the-scenes look at his day-to-day research and discover how curiosity, innovation, and teamwork are driving progress in the fight against HIV. 🧪🦠🔍 by @massgeneralbrigham
