BERLIN ART WEEK — OPENING

On September 9, MASSOUMI at Maschinenraum opens it's Autumn Exhibition.

What connects both artists is an interest in the trace: the mark left behind when gesture, memory, or touch meet material.

MASSOUMI at Maschinenraum, Zionskirchstraße 73a – 10119 Berlin
Staring 5:30 PM

ARTHUR LÖWEN (@arthurloewen ) paints the way memory works, not linear, but layered, overwritten, half-erased. Lines appear, get buried under the next gesture, resurface as fragments. What's left on the canvas isn't a picture so much as the residue of a process no one fully controls.
Frankfurt-based, trained under Walter Dahn at @hbk.braunschweig, his work has been shown at Kunstverein Hannover @kunstverein_hannover and @neuer.aachener.kunstverein , among others.

TANJA THORDSEN (@tanja.thordsen ) brings a rare perspective to her practice: as a Mirror-Touch synesthete, a trait shared by roughly 2% of the population, she physically senses the touch and movement of others.
That interconnection becomes material in pure beeswax, which she doesn't shape so much as let grow, layer upon layer, echoing structures found in nature: memory, transformation, and relation made tangible.

We'd be delighted to welcome you to the opening.

PARIS: Behind the scenes in Diane Benoit du Rey’s studio this summer, where she was working on the paintings now on view at MASSOUMI Hamburg.

Layer by layer, Diane builds subtle shifts in colour, exploring how light changes the way we perceive a surface.

A look at the process behind the finished works.

Before she ever picked up a brush, Salomé Berger (@_salomeberger ) learned to move. This early discipline in dance still runs through everything she paints.

Her work circles around the body, not as a fixed subject to be rendered, but as something perpetually in motion, caught between recognition and dissolution.

Her paintings resist theatrical staging. Rather than presenting the body as a finished image, Berger strips it of pose and performance, redirecting attention toward the underlying dynamics.

Working from collage, she fuses fragments of bodies with plant forms, landscape, and organic matter, building pictorial worlds that feel at once familiar and faintly surreal.
Spaces that drift between the paradisiacal and the dystopian.
The canvas becomes an intimate stage where everything follows its own internal rhythm, suspended between naturalism and synthesis.

Berger studied at the University of Fine Arts Münster under Prof. Cornelius Völker, becoming his master student in 2022.

Her work has been recognized with a @daad_artists graduation fellowship, a travel grant, and artist-in-residence fellowships at @kunstvereinduisburg and Werkstatt Altena e.V..
In 2025 she was shortlisted for the Ida Gerhardi Förderpreis.
She has held solo exhibitions and was part of group shows across Europe and China.

She lives and works in Düsseldorf, Germany.

See Berger's work now at MASSOUMI Gallery Hamburg as part of our Autumn Exhibition.

Arthur Löwen (@arthurloewen ) builds his paintings through a recurring set of gestures, lines and signs. Leaving traces.

He paints, covers, repeats and shifts them. There is a system behind the process, but the outcome is never fully planned.

Löwen refers to this approach as a kind of formula. The same movements can return from one work to another, yet scale, colour and the decisions made along the way keep changing what they become.

Some of the signs are surprisingly personal. His own name, for example, appears mirrored in several works, gradually losing its function as language and becoming part of the painting itself.
There is also a sense that one work carries something of the ones that came before it.

In his studio, Löwen has kept cloths used to absorb excess paint over years of working, later presenting them as an Archiv.
It is a simple but telling detail: painting leaves a memory, even outside the canvas.
Perhaps that is also a way to look at Löwen’s work. Not as an image that needs to be decoded, but as something that records what happened while it was being made.

Presenting Slovak painter Peter Cvik (@cvikpeter), whose work treats memory not as fixed ground but as a fluid, unstable structure.

In his new series 'To Leave Everything That Means Nothing', fragments of lived experience layer into painterly situations where time dissolves and overlaps: Day within night, growth within decay.

Cvik rejects the digital, returning to the slowness of oil paint. For him this slowness isn’t nostalgia. It’s a critical position, making room for doubt, depth and thought.

For the first time his work is shown in Germany at @massoumi.gallery.

„TO LEAVE EVERYTHING THAT MEANS NOTHING“ — @cvikpeter

In his latest series, Peter Cvik explores memory as something fluid and unstable. Fragments of lived experience overlap, dissolve and reappear, creating spaces where day meets night, growth meets decay and time refuses to move in a straight line.

In a world increasingly translated into binary code, Cvik deliberately returns to the slowness of painting. Not out of nostalgia, but as a way of making room for doubt, depth and thought.

His paintings offer no fixed narratives or singular truths. Instead, they invite us to question what we see, take our time and imagine reality differently.

Currently on view at MASSOUMI Hamburg.

Thomas Kühnapfel

What happens when steel is pushed beyond what it is meant to withstand?

Thomas Kühnapfel works with solid steel and stainless steel, subjecting sheets of metal to immense pressure until they expand, curve, and develop their own structural form.

Nothing is carved away. Nothing is modelled. The sculpture emerges through resistance.

The result is a striking paradox: massive steel transformed into forms that appear almost weightless. Taut, swollen surfaces catch the light like polished stone, while their physical presence remains unmistakably powerful.

Since the mid-1990s, Kühnapfel has developed this highly distinctive approach to sculpture, rooted in a direct and uncompromising dialogue with material.

Born in Rees in 1966, Kühnapfel studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf (@knstkdmdssldrf ) under Tony Cragg (@craggtony ). His large-scale works have been presented internationally, including at @artbasel Miami, @museumkurhaus , and @skulpturenparkwaldfrieden .

Currently on view at MASSOUMI Hamburg.
