𝘍𝘭𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘔𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘉𝘦 𝘊𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘱 by Common Ground (@commongroun.d)

Flour is a fundamental material of life. The flour bag is its container and carrier. It’s an object that holds systems of labour, land, and exchange. The image of the flour bag is embedded into our collective imaginary: stacked on fortified pallets, made to wait on trucks at borders, or scattered on the ground, stained red. These images make visible what global food infrastructures obscure: the weaponization of food dependency and hunger.

This work by Common Ground sketches a genealogy of flour: it traces a network of mills where grain, often grown great distances away, is processed into flour before moving through bakeries and into homes.

In this installation, the flour bags function simultaneously as a building block, a pedagogical tool, and as an invitation: a place to sit, gather, and learn. Join Common Ground this Sunday 28 June during 𝘧𝘭𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘮𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘣𝘦… a collective learning session on the fragility of global food infrastructures, where they will activate 𝘍𝘭𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘔𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘉𝘦 𝘊𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘱.

@commongroun.d is a collaborative artistic project by Anna Celda (@masssamama) and Saja Amro (@sajaamr). Using the dining table and kitchen as learning environments, their projects delve into topics such as female labor, inherited knowledge, and food/famine as a tool for control.

Common Ground invites you to the second edition of 𝘧𝘭𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘮𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘣𝘦… Sunday 28 June at W139 🌾

Together with Bread Buffet, @commongroun.d hosts the second activation of 𝘍𝘭𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘔𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘉𝘦 𝘊𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘱, their installation which will become a learning space and a work site. In this session they will think through the systems that shape how food moves, who has access to it, and what kinds of dependencies are built into everyday nourishment.

How did food become infrastructure? What does “civilization” have to do with grain? What forms of labor, extraction, and control sustain contemporary grain distribution systems? What knowledge have we lost through industrialization and centralization? And what might resilience, interdependence, and self-sufficiency look like in the future?

Bring your curiosity, experiences, doubts, and questions, and join Common Ground in slowing down to think collectively about the fragile systems that sustain us, and the possibilities for building others. There will be snacks and drinks provided.

Common Ground welcomes you to 𝘧𝘭𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘮𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘣𝘦... on Sunday May 24 🌾

This is the first activation of 𝘍𝘭𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘔𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘉𝘦 𝘊𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘱, an installation that becomes a learning space, and a work site. We begin with a question: must flour be cheap? From there, we let it unfold through stories, bodies, knowings, and speculations—these become the curriculum.

Above us, a constellation of collected flour bags. Beneath us, sacks holding the weight of hunger, of resistance, of distance traveled from field to mill to bakery to hand. We’ll lie with that weight, carry it, rearrange it, and feel what it does to the body, how pressure grounds us, how heaviness speaks through us.

Together we’ll move through conversations about food systems, mills and grain, food autonomy, aid, and famine, and the quiet violence of a price that was never really just about the mere cost of flour.

The second installment of 𝘧𝘭𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘮𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘣𝘦... will be on June 28, more information about this very soon!

Massa Mama es el proyecto musical de la artista y cocinera Anna Celda. Enmarcada en su práctica de cuidados, Massa Mama ahonda en el mundo de los imaginarios maximalistas queer del mundo de la noche.

💥 Este proyecto propone un sonido influenciado por el folklore valenciano así como los sonidos de la ruta destroy, pasando por los nichos contemporáneos de internet que la artista navega.

The feeling of not knowing weighs on me like the heavy machinery that seems to stop the plane from flying as we’re stationed on the ground. But this very machinery is the one that catapults the aircraft into the sky, perhaps in a more calculated move than the one my heart does inside my ribcage. If I put my hand on my chest, though, I can feel the tiny explosions, combustions and fires that are keeping the plane off the ground. I guess it’s all about transition, and at some point I will find myself back on earth ~ taken in The In-Between by @masssamama
