Greg Coulson is not just singing lead on Thank You Super Sledgehammer — he is working a proper two-keyboard setup live in the room.

Real Hammond organ, rare Hohner Pianet/Clavinet Duo (thank you Pete Billington), and the vocal on top.

That puts the performance in a very different place from a standard “singer at the keyboard” clip. It is live musicianship, vintage keys, groove and arrangement all happening at once.

Jim Watson, Simon Peter King and Carter Arrington have each had their turn. The fourth and final teaser belongs to the horns.

Nichol Thomson and I met at Berklee College of Music in 1995. He played trombone on the first Funkestra album, Boozing Wizards, and since then our paths have kept crossing whenever there was something interesting—and preferably quite loud—to create together.

On FUNKOPIA, Nichol’s Horn House is far more than decorative brass. Its muscular arrangements run through “The Lamb of Funk,” “Code 12,” “Old Blood,” “Crowbar” and “The One True Coin,” giving a substantial part of the album its particular bite.

Tomorrow, the full “lost” live-in-the-studio rhythm-section video for “The Lamb of Funk” finally goes live. The audio has been available since last October. The film simply took the scenic route.

Featuring Carter Arrington, Doug Harper, Simon Peter King, Jim Watson and yours truly—with Horn House making the Lamb considerably less domesticated.

FUNKOPIA is out now. Carter returns for The Exchange, our limited UK tour this September and October.
