“Carter’s Boogaloo” grew some horns in this room.

Tom Kleyn wrote the horn arrangement and recorded it with Paul Jordanous and Frank Walden at Masterlink Productions. A few charts, a considerable quantity of metal tubing and a session every bit as funky as the finished track.

Written by Carter Arrington, arranged and produced by Carter and Stefan Redtenbacher, and produced by Stefan, the track features Carter and Nigel Price on guitars, Liam Dunachie on Hammond, Joel Barford on drums—and Stefan on bass.

Kingston gave The Exchange a sold-out start on Friday. This week we continue:

23 Sept · PizzaExpress Live, Holborn
24 Sept · Dawkes Live, Maidenhead
25 Sept · Hootananny, Brixton
26 Sept · The Bear Club, Luton

Two things happen this Friday.

We release “Carter’s Boogaloo”, and that evening Carter and I begin The Exchange tour with the Funkestra at Ex Cellar in Kingston.

While we were making The Exchange, I encouraged Carter to invite some of the exceptional guitarists he has got to know in the UK. For this track, he invited Parliamentary Jazz Award-winning guitarist Nigel Price.

Carter wrote the tune. Carter, Nigel and Liam Dunachie each take a solo. Hearing two master guitarists with such different musical voices respond to the same tune is one of the track’s particular pleasures.

These photographs are from that Masterlink Session.

Kingston tickets and all tour dates are available through the link in the bio.

“Carter’s Boogaloo” arrives this Friday—the same day The Exchange tour begins in Kingston.

One of the ideas behind The Exchange was to bring some of Carter’s UK musical friendships into the Masterlink Sessions. Stefan encouraged him to invite several of the exceptional guitarists he had met here.

On “Carter’s Boogaloo”, Carter is joined on the recording by Nigel Price—leader of the Nigel Price Organ Trio, named Jazz Ensemble of the Year at the 2010 Parliamentary Jazz Awards, and winner of the 2016 British Jazz Award for Best Guitarist.

So thrilled to release this live version of Lion Eyes with the insane talents at Masterlink Sessions. Thank you to Stefan and the Funkestra for accompanying me and bringing a new version of Lion Eyes out into the world. I couldn’t pick between keys and guitar so I played both ! Watch the full video session on YouTube to see me attempt to switch instruments gracefully 🤣

A little bit about this song:
Lion Eyes was inspired initially by an Oscar Wilde story (called The Master) but it quickly became more personal, reflecting on a failing relationship and finding the optimism and resolve to move on. Written with Tim Baxter the studio version is on my upcoming album.

The band:
(in alphabetical order of last name)

Daisy Chute - vocals, acoustic guitar, Wurlitzer
Joe Glossop - Hammond organ
Luke Harris - drums
Terry Lewis - guitar
Stefan Redtenbacher - bass
Karl Vanden Bossche - percussion

PRODUCTION
recorded, mixed and mastered by James Welch (Masterlink Productions)
video by Leo Mansell
studio assistant Tyler Davies

‘Lion Eyes’ written by Daisy Chute and Tim Baxter
Produced by Daisy Chute and Stefan Redtenbacher
Released on RSB Records

Jim Watson, Simon Peter King and Carter Arrington have each had their turn. The fourth and final teaser belongs to the horns.

Nichol Thomson and I met at Berklee College of Music in 1995. He played trombone on the first Funkestra album, Boozing Wizards, and since then our paths have kept crossing whenever there was something interesting—and preferably quite loud—to create together.

On FUNKOPIA, Nichol’s Horn House is far more than decorative brass. Its muscular arrangements run through “The Lamb of Funk,” “Code 12,” “Old Blood,” “Crowbar” and “The One True Coin,” giving a substantial part of the album its particular bite.

Tomorrow, the full “lost” live-in-the-studio rhythm-section video for “The Lamb of Funk” finally goes live. The audio has been available since last October. The film simply took the scenic route.

Featuring Carter Arrington, Doug Harper, Simon Peter King, Jim Watson and yours truly—with Horn House making the Lamb considerably less domesticated.

FUNKOPIA is out now. Carter returns for The Exchange, our limited UK tour this September and October.
