What if the secret to helping your horse release tension isn't doing more, but knowing when to do less?

One of the fundamental principles of The Masterson Method® is working below the horse's bracing response. But why is this so important?

In this conversation, Dr. Stephen Peters and Jim Masterson discuss the physiology behind this approach and why staying below that threshold can make such a difference.

When we push through resistance, the horse's body may respond by guarding, tightening, or protecting itself. Even if we achieve the movement we're asking for, it doesn't necessarily mean the horse is moving in relaxation or releasing tension.

But when we stay below that defensive threshold, we give the horse's body an opportunity to respond differently.

And that's where the magic of The Masterson Method® happens: we follow the horse's responses, soften when we encounter resistance, and allow the horse to participate in the process of releasing tension.

It's not about how much movement we can get. It's about how much relaxation we can find within that movement.

Listen to Dr. Stephen Peters and Jim Masterson explain why this principle is so important. Have you ever noticed how your horse responds differently when you use less pressure?

Want to learn how to recognize your horse's subtle responses and work below the bracing response? Explore our Masterson Method Weekend Courses at the link in our Bio.

Why Wednesday ~ I've noticed that the muscle just behind my horse's jaw seems quite prominent and sometimes feels tight. Could this be related to tension, and is there anything I can do to help him relax that area?

Answer: It could be! Horses can develop tension around the jaw and poll for different reasons, including bracing against the bit, postural habits, or compensating for discomfort elsewhere in the body.

When a horse holds tension in this area, it may affect how freely and comfortably he moves his head and neck. One way to encourage relaxation in this area is through a gentle technique called the Lateral Wiggle.

As Jim Masterson demonstrates in this video, the movement is incredibly small, and the key isn't how much you move the horse's head, but how relaxed the movement is.

Here's what to pay attention to:

1) Start softly. Place one hand gently on your horse's nose and the other in the groove between the atlas and poll.

2) Invite a little movement. Gently bring the nose slightly toward you without pulling or forcing, and introduce tiny side-to-side wiggles.

3) Keep everything relaxed. Think micro-wiggles! Soften both hands and allow the movement to stay loose and easy.

4) Follow your horse's responses. If your horse braces against your hand, that's important information! Soften, yield slightly, and give him the opportunity to release that tension before trying again.

Remember, the goal isn't to move the horse's head farther. It's to find relaxation within the movement. This is one of the things that makes The Masterson Method® so different: rather than asking the horse to push through tension, we listen to what his body is telling us and work with him.

Want to learn how to recognize these subtle responses and use gentle techniques to help your horse release tension?
Join us at a Masterson Method® Weekend Course and discover how working with your horse, rather than on your horse, can make a difference.

Does your horse pull away when you try to touch their head, especially around the poll? What if the answer wasn't to try again, but to move your hand further away?

In The Masterson Method®, we work with the horse, not against their bracing response. And sometimes, that means using such a light touch that we're not even touching the horse at all!

In this clip, Jim Masterson demonstrates how to use Air Gap touch to help a head-shy horse become aware of tension around the poll without becoming guarded. The key? Watch for the horse's responses.

If your horse pulls their head away, move your hand back until you find a distance where they're comfortable enough to respond, perhaps with a blink. Then stay there, without asking for more, and give them time to process and potentially release some of that tension. It may seem like you're doing nothing, but sometimes doing less is exactly what the horse needs.

Have you ever tried working with your horse without actually touching them? We'd love to hear about your experience!

Why Wednesday ~ My horse has seemed more tense and distracted than usual lately. Nothing seems obviously wrong, but he has a harder time settling and relaxing. Can The Masterson Method® help with this kind of mental tension?

Answer: Yes. Horses can hold surprising amounts of tension in the forehead. Sometimes this area can feel quite firm or even hard, particularly when a horse has been dealing with stress, changes in their environment, or other sources of tension.

The Forehead Hold is a Light to the Core technique you can use to explore this area while encouraging your horse to soften and relax.

Here’s how to try it:

1) Gently hold the halter with your left hand and place your right palm lightly in the center of your horse’s forehead.

2) Use an extremely light touch—think Egg Yolk pressure or even less. Slowly move the skin upward toward the poll, almost as though you were sliding a piece of paper.

3) Pay attention to your horse’s responses. A blink, softening of the eye, change in breathing, or slight lowering of the head can tell you that your horse is feeling what you’re doing.

4) When you notice a response, stop and soften your hand. Stay there and allow your horse time to process, following the same principles of Search-Response-Stay-Release (SRSR).

5) If your horse becomes restless or fussy, don’t increase the pressure. Try going even lighter and give them time.

6) You can gradually explore different areas of the forehead and around the muscles in front of the ears, always letting your horse’s responses guide you.

With this technique, the goal isn’t to make your horse relax or release tension. It’s to use softness and awareness to work with your horse, giving them the opportunity to let go in their own time. And most of the time, the lighter you go, the easier it is for the horse to let go.

To find out more about these subtle but powerful techniques, join one of our Light to the Core Courses (link in Bio) and learn how they can positively affect the deepest interconnections of the horse's body.

If an Advanced 5-Day Course has been on your mind, there are only a few opportunities left to take that next step in 2026.

What happens when you spend five days practicing The Masterson Method® with different horses?

You encounter different patterns, different responses, and different challenges, and you have more time to develop your ability to feel what’s happening beneath your hands.

As Jim explains in this reel, working with different horses helps you recognize where a horse may be holding tension, how it can show up when you ask for relaxed movement, and how to follow the horse’s responses as you work.

These are the final Advanced 5-Day Courses of 2026:

USA
📍 Elgin, IL | October 12–16
📍 Portola Valley/San Jose, CA | November 2–6
📍 Manor, TX | November 2–6
📍 Tucson, AZ | November 9–13

 Overseas
📍 Horley, UK | October 12–16
📍 Elimbah, Australia | October 12–16
📍 Christchurch, New Zealand | November 23–27

If you’ve completed a Weekend Course and have been thinking about going further, now is the time; there won’t be another Advanced 5-Day opportunity in 2026.

Why Wednesday ~ My horse has a hard time standing for the farrier. Could doing The Masterson Method® beforehand help?

Answer: Yes, it could. Sometimes a horse that struggles to stand quietly or hold up a leg for the farrier isn’t simply being difficult. Holding a leg in a certain position may be uncomfortable because of tension or compensation elsewhere in the body.

As Jim explains in the video, after bodywork, the horse may be able to stand in a more natural, less compensating posture. This can be helpful for the farrier when assessing and trimming the feet. And when the horse is more relaxed and comfortable, it can also make trimming or shoeing easier and create a more positive experience for everyone involved.

Before your farrier’s visit, you can try the Bladder Meridian Technique and Hind End Points to help your horse relax and release tension, and see whether it becomes easier for them to offer and hold up their hind legs.

Doing bodywork after your farrier visits can be helpful, too. Your horse may have had to hold their legs in unfamiliar positions for a while, so afterward you can check in with their body and help release any tension that may have accumulated during the process.

Does your horse find some parts of a farrier visit more difficult than others? Let us know in the comments. 👇

Join us at a hands-on Weekend Course to learn how to find and release tension with your horse—not just work on your horse. Through hands-on instruction, you’ll discover how to help improve your horse’s mobility, comfort, and performance while building an even stronger partnership.

Could two days change the way you work with your horse? Our students often tell us that a Masterson Method® Weekend Course gives them more than a set of bodywork techniques.

Over two hands-on days, you’ll work with the horses provided by the course host while learning how to notice their subtle responses, adjust your touch and pressure, and follow what each horse is telling you.

You’ll practice techniques designed to help release tension in key areas of the body, while developing something just as valuable: a better feel for when to stay, when to soften, and when to move on.

Then you take what you’ve learned home to your own horse. Curious how much you could learn in just one weekend?

Find a Masterson Method Weekend Course near you (link in Bio) and learn techniques you can take home to help your horse with comfort and performance while building a deeper connection together.

10 Things We’ve Learned From Jim
#10 If it’s not working, go lighter.

We couldn’t think of a better lesson to finish this week with.

Over the past several days, we’ve looked back at some of the things Jim has taught us: to take our time, develop our feel, pay attention to what the horse is telling us, use a softer touch, keep our sense of humor… and, today, to remember that when something isn’t working, the answer isn’t always to try harder. Sometimes, it’s to go lighter.

In this clip, Jim demonstrates that beautifully. Using barely any pressure, he watches for the horse's smallest responses and waits. No pushing, no trying to make something happen. He just pays attention and lets the horse show him what comes next.

It’s a simple idea, but one that says a lot about the way Jim has taught so many of us to work with the horse, rather than simply doing something to the horse. And since today is the day we’ve been counting down to…

🎉🎉🎉Happy Birthday, Jim! 🎉🎉🎉

Thank you for everything you’ve taught us (and continue to teach us) about horses, feel, patience, listening, and, of course, remembering that less is more.

Now we’d love to hear from you: What’s one thing you’ve learned from Jim that has changed the way you work with horses? We are sure your comment can be the best birthday present for him!👇

And if these 10 lessons have made you curious about experiencing The Masterson Method® for yourself, a Weekend Course is the perfect place to start. Spend two days learning these techniques hands-on with horses, developing your feel, and discovering how to follow the horse’s responses.

10 Things We’ve Learned From Jim
#8 A soft touch can lead to a big release.

If you watch Jim’s hand closely in this clip, it might look like he’s barely doing anything. And that’s exactly the point.
As he works on the Psoas Point, Jim uses a very soft touch to bring the horse's attention to that spot and waits. There’s no pushing or trying to make something happen. He stays with the horse, pays attention to the subtle responses, and gives the horse time to process.

And then comes that yawn. It’s a beautiful example of something Jim often says: less is more.

We’re counting down 10 Things We’ve Learned From Jim as we head toward his birthday tomorrow, September 26.
And don’t miss Thing #9 in our Stories today... this time, the horse turns the tables on Jim. 😂

10 Things We’ve Learned From Jim
#6 Wait for the horse to relax in your hand.

There’s something especially valuable to watch in this demonstration of the Hind Leg Release Down and Forward: not only what Jim is doing, but also how he feels and waits for the horse in order to do it gently.

Learning the technique and performing the movement correctly matters. But with The Masterson Method®, we’re also learning to develop the feel to recognize when the horse softens, when the weight of the leg begins to relax into our hands, and when the horse is ready for us to continue the movement.

Watch how Jim takes his time. He supports the leg, waits for the horse, and follows the changes he feels rather than rushing through them. Developing that feel and learning to follow the horse is what helps us find the relaxation in the movement we’re looking for.

And like any skill, feel develops with practice, which you get plenty of during our Weekend Courses.

We’re counting down 10 Things We’ve Learned From Jim as we head toward his birthday on September 26.
And don’t miss Thing #7 in our Stories today!
