Today is the last day of '40 Years, 40 Things, 40 Pins' and these works by Stevei Houkāmau (Ngati Porou, Te Whanau a Apanui, Rangitane) seem appropriate. Stevei's practice looks back to her past, in particular her whakapapa to make work for the future. Something that the exhibition itself does by acknowledging our history while also highlighting our path for the future.
Join us today, especially as Chester Nealie joins us for a talk at 11am.
And of course the e-catalogue is online on our website or through our bio link.

Last days of '40 Years, 40 Things, 40 Pins'
As a mother-daughter team ourselves, it is such a pleasure to work with the talented duo and fellow mother-daughter team, Sulieti Fieme'a Burrows and Tui Emma Gillies, as such important knowledge holders it is a privilege to share their work with you all.
We have a stunning new collaborative 'The Twins' a ngatu (Tongan bark cloth) piece that combines Sulieti's traditional knowledge with Tui's contemporary flare.
About the piece they write
'The Twins is a collaborative piece that feels like two separate visions that have become one. This piece invokes a personal mythology and invites the viewer to consider that world. It looks like a mother and daughter but I have called it The Twins because for me the two people are symbolic of twin aspects of a single psyche. The piece speaks of the subconscious. The border painted by Sulieti, the mother in this collaboration, could be a womb. The Twins, painted by me, the daughter, exist in a world of dream that can be both liquid with fish and a tuna (or eel) and air with moths flying around.
The moths are symbolic of words, truths, secrets and stories either kept in or let out. The smaller person is the filter through which ancestral knowledge is mixed with new experience.
The bigger person is more world-facing, she is out front with a mask snugly in place.
The tuna holds and imparts wisdom. The fish are weaving the fabric of destiny.'
Last day to view the show is Saturday 3rd October, 10-4pm.
The e-catalogue can be enjoyed by all via our website or following the link in our bio.
Enjoy!

For this special celebration I made, besides the green one, also this brooch „40“

First Thursdays is back for October, with new exhibition openings across the Karangahape Art District.

Moat Gallery, MSJD and HAUMI E STUDIOS all open new exhibitions on Thursday night. RM is also celebrating a new presentation, ‘Diere, Adan’ by Arianna Ramos, at its pop-up space on Beresford Square.

To mark the final week of their exhibitions, Masterworks hosts a talk on Wednesday at 11am, ‘Object Collecting: A Group Approach’, with members of Stichbury Group discussing the logistics of collecting together and the history of their art group. On Saturday at 11am, they host a talk by celebrated woodfire potter Chester Nealie.  All welcome.

Also ending this week is ‘one of these situations’ at Lett Thomas, featuring work by Diane Arbus, Chris Booth, Mike Hewson and Kate Newby; alongside exhibitions by Deb Platt and Jenette Mullins at The Charlotte Museum. All end Saturday.

On Saturday, Tautai hosts a Community Fono to discuss the outcome of its recent Creative New Zealand funding application. Facilitated by Caren Rangi, the fono is an opportunity to reflect and come together to share thoughts, ideas and aspirations for what the future of Tautai might look like. Registration is required.

Please check directly with each gallery for opening hours and exhibition details, as these may vary.

Talking pots with Chester Nealie
11am, Saturday 3 October
Masterworks
Unit 4 / 2 Canada Street, Auckland CBD
Please join us on the last day of our 40th anniversary exhibition to hear from celebrated woodfire potter, the wonderful Chester Nealie, who is visiting briefly from Australia. Among other subjects, Chester will talk about his newly completed multi-chamber anagama kiln at his home in Augusta, Western Australia – the southwest tip of the continent.
Damian Skinner noted in the Chester Nealie monograph Etched in Fire that ‘each pot is a set of effects that Chester wants us to interpret’. Come and listen to Chester explain how to go about it. All welcome.

Such a pleasure to have these two works as part of our 40th anniversary exhibition from the masterful Tom Moore.
Some of you may remember the outstanding installation Tom made for his first solo with us years ago at our Ponsonby gallery. He is still as excellent and inventive as ever in his latest works 'Marsupial Dryad' and 'Sprouting Bounty'.
Tom says about the works 'I like to show a couple of works in conversation otherwise they seem kind of lonely. The reason for this is that I don’t really think of them as things at all.

I work within ancient craft traditions based around glass object-making but my aim is to imbue the glass with a relatable character and to suggest subjectivity and agency. Sprouting Bounty and Marsupial Dryad are creatures based on hybrid animal forms that encompass multiple characters.

This is all to apologise that I may have messed-up the numbers in the show 40 Years, 40 things. Nevertheless, I am delighted that SB and MD are able to attend the party for Masterworks 40th anniversary.'

'40 Years, 40 Things and 40 Pins' is on you one more week, final day Saturday 3rd of October, 10-4pm.
Come and visit if you can or enjoy the e-catalogue from our website or on this bio link from afar.

Object Collecting – a group approach
11am, Wednesday 30 September
Masterworks
Unit 4 / 2 Canada Street, Auckland CBD

How do you set about building a private collection of objects and art?
One way is to form an art acquisitions group, which is exactly what the Stichbury group did in 1994.
Please join Stichbury group members, including Brenda Chappell and Bev Smaill, for an informal illustrated talk about how the group formed, the logistics of a shared collection, and an account of how they decided on particular works.
