FOCUSING AHEAD OF TIME : I’ve set my sights on entering awards and competitions with my glasswork.

It’s not something I focused on throughout my 28 year career, being caught up with full time glass casting practice, solo exhibitions with @masterworksnz @travergallery and commissions. I realise now that participating in awards is an important part of being a professional craft artist.

It’s satisfying to be prepared and give myself the possibility of inclusion among peers across the world.

This work is ‘Layla Dahlia’ a large cast glass vessel featuring allusive aspects my body and over-scaled dahlia flowers - inspired by the disjointed nature of life in lockdown during the pandemic.

The development of this new work and adaptation of process to enable such scale was supported by @creativenz

As we head into the long weekend, make time to catch several exhibitions closing this Saturday across the Karangahape Art District.

Don’t miss Rangi Kipa at Melanie Roger Gallery ; ‘Rokc the Moon’ by Reece King, Peter Hawkesby and Tyronne Te Waa at Anna Miles Gallery; ‘Permission to Stay’ by Leitu Taulisi at Moat Gallery; ‘Ka Kukuti’ by Robyn Stewart and Tui Hirabayashi at HAUMI E STUDIOS; and two exhibitions at RM.

Midweek, join Coastal Signs on Wednesday evening for the opening of Ruth Buchanan’s new solo presentation, ‘Housekeeping’.

Then, on Saturday, head to Artspace Aotearoa for a tour of ‘Group Admits Mistake’ with exhibiting artists Ken Faber, Lolani Dalosa and Rangi White, alongside Kaiāwhina Whakaaturanga Assistant Curator Matthew Hanson.
The artists will share insights into their creative processes and the evolution of their works over the past year, shaped by studio visits, research trips, mentor exchanges and ongoing experimentation as part of the Chartwell Trust New Commissions programme. And if you missed it, tune in to 95bFM’s ‘Various Artists’ to listen back to a kōrero between Maya Reed and artist Robyn Stewart about her work at HAUMI E STUDIOS.
Please check directly with each gallery for opening hours, event times and exhibition details, as these may vary.

Love colour but scared of clashing? Pick three colours that sit side by side on the colour wheel. That’s an analogous palette, and it’s one way to build a scheme that hangs together. Paint the walls, then break the rules with one bright and one outsider. Our fifth colour theory lesson with @aaltopaint starts with clay-brick Court Shoe, almost-black Lady Jane and caramel Crema. Aperol on the skirting brings the zing, and a crisp mint called Fiction on the furniture cools it all down. Styled by @juliettewanty with ceramics by Aaron Scythe and Richard Parker. This week, the Karangahape Art District has a strong line-up of new exhibitions, openings and exhibitions not to miss.

At Melanie Roger Gallery, master carver Rangi Kipa (Te Āti Awa, Taranaki Iwi, Ngāti Mutunga, Ngāti Tama) presents a short exhibition of new carved works, coinciding with his presentation at the 18th Lyon Biennale in France. Carved from whale bone and teeth recovered from natural strandings along the shoreline of Aotearoa, these works honour the whale as the supreme ariki (chief) of their domain, our revered ancestor and relation, and recognise our place within the interconnected cycles of oceanic life. The exhibition runs for just over a week, with an artist reception on Saturday afternoon. Don’t miss it!

Opening Wednesday evening this week is The Making of Cleo de Clinq a Sept 2026
by Jacquline Fraser at Lett Thomas. On Saturday join them too for an exhibition floor talk by Gregory Burke at 1pm.

Offcuts by Salome Tanuvasa also opens at Tim Melville presenting an exhibition of new paintings created during her time as the recipient of the 2025-2026 C Art Trust Award. And concurrently, Tim Melville opens INNER GARDEN: Homage to my teachers by Sarah Guppy in the office gallery space. Join them for both Wednesday evening.
And closing this Saturday - Gil Hanly’s exhibition of photography at Charles Ninow - a must-see before it ends.

Please check directly with each gallery for opening hours and exhibition details, as these may vary.

Kia ora, Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland! sharonpeoplesstudio and I are excited to be bringing ‘Looking for Birds’ to masterworksnz opening next Saturday!

Sharon and my creative relationship goes back a long way, beginning with me watching, learning and then making alongside one another. Over the years, that shared space has grown into an ongoing conversation — through our work, the ideas we exchange, and the ways we each see the world.

This exhibition brings those conversations together in the gallery, with two distinct practices connected by a curiosity about looking, noticing, and the relationship between the observer and the observed. After all, who’s looking at whom?

We’d love you to come along, we hope to see you there!

Masterworks Gallery, opening Saturday 17 October 2-4pm. The exhibition will run until 14 November 2026.
