23 years since the U.S.🇺🇸 has won a gold medal at the Youth Worlds. I couldn’t do it without my parents support and with the help of my coaches @bowerssailing @erikarreineke @andrewlewissailing. Proud to represent my country one last time at the 2026 Youth Worlds this December🌎

A huge thank you to @youthracingcentral @ussailing and @alamitosbayyc for putting together this event, and to my coaches @bowerssailing and @andrewlewissailing for their guidance and support.

Thank you to @zhikglobal @velalalaser @element6evolution @predictwind and @sailteck for supporting this incredible journey and providing me with the equipment I need to prepare and compete at the highest level.

ILCA 6 Youth Worlds ✅

Came into the regatta with very big expectations, and instead of a trophy I finished the regatta with lots of lessons to learn from and personal growth. An incredibly tough regatta with lots of great sailors, and it’s amazing to see what an experience a regatta can bring.

I want to thank my coaches @bowerssailing @andrewlewissailing @erikarreineke and @youthracingcentral . I also want to thank @sailingfdnny @floridasailingfoundation @zhikglobal @sailteck for all your support on this incredible journey. Last but not least, thank you to my parents for all the sacrifices they have made in order to give me this amazing opportunity to do what I love.

After five days of intense racing in Vilamoura, Portugal, David Coates delivered a standout performance to win Gold in the ILCA 6 Male at the 2025 Youth Sailing World Championships. Sailing with consistency through everything from drifting conditions to 30-knot blasts, Coates was able to put it all together on the world stage.

“From the beginning of last year, it’s been my goal to be at this event — and to win it feels amazing,” said Coates. “I really wanted to prove America has a place on the podium, especially in ILCA 6. Seeing my name alongside the legends on the St. Lawrence Trophy is just insane.”

The podium momentum continued for Team USA as Nacra 15 Mixed team Dylan Tomko and Casey Small captured the Bronze, improving on their fifth-place finish from 2024 and winning the tiebreak in a hard-fought fleet. Garrett January added a strong 4th-place finish in iQFOiL Male, highlighting the depth of talent across the team.

All 16 athletes on the 2025 US Sailing Youth Worlds Team battled world-class competition with support from six US Sailing coaches, finishing 5th overall in the Nations Trophy. With many athletes eligible to return next year, the future is bright for the USA ✨

12th in the World, solid way to end the ILCA 6 World Championship. Great mental practice for future events, especially after racing 140 of the best sailors from all around the world for 6 days straight.
