Shutter & Light Collective is excited to partner with Photographic Center Northwest to announce an Open Call for Submissions for CURRENTS, a group photography exhibition opening this November!!

We’re looking for work from across the analog photography spectrum, bringing together different approaches that reflect the distinct analog photography culture growing throughout the Northwest.

CURRENTS will bring together artists, processes, and photography communities from across the region, with work curated through analog process, visual style, and storytelling.

Submission deadline : OCTOBER 1st. Instructions, and deadlines can be found at the link in the @shutterandlightco bio.

El Mercado de Tlacolula on film.
First and last slides are videos and everything in between is shot on 35mm Fujicolor C200.

This market is located a few town over from@the city of Oaxaca but it’s worth the journey to go on a Sunday when all sorts of vendors from the surrounding towns and pueblos come to sell their traditional wares, textiles, food and handmade goods. There’s even an area where all the butchers are located and they will grill anything you order on the spot while other people walk around selling onions, tortillas, tlayudas and chilis to complete your meal.

This first photo was selected for last night’s Chase the Light, an annual global exhibition put on by the Photographic Center Northwest. For this event, participants can only submit photos taken during the weekend before the exhibition, with all sales helping support the center.

My piece sold while I was walking around the show, so I never got to see who bought it. Either way, I’m glad it sold for the fundraiser and that I had the chance to exhibit alongside so many talented photographers.

I also wanted to share a few more photos from last weekend’s hike, when I made the selected image, along with some of the other photographs I submitted for the exhibition.

This quote by the Nicaraguan poet Rubén Darío is one a lot of older generations in El Salvador grew up hearing in school. He was influential in shaping Central American identity in the early 1900s, and this line still resonates with a lot of Salvadorans because it speaks to how a small country can still carry huge dreams.

More point-and-shoot and SLR shots from some of the outdoor views between the beaches of La Unión and San Salvador in El Salvador. We actually met our friend in the 3rd photo at a nearby restaurant the night before, and he immediately recognized us the next morning when we showed up to the beach.

Caught these photos of BINAES on Fuji 400 and Kodak XX.

The National Library of El Salvador (BINAES), located near the National Palace of El Salvador, has become one of the biggest symbols of the changes happening across the country. After more than 20 years of El Salvador using the US dollar as its national currency, a lot of these recent changes feel like the country is beginning to signal less dependence on the US and American influence overall. From infrastructure and safety, to new global investment and tourism, the space feels like a reflection of a country moving in a very different direction than the one many people remember. The library was funded by China, and the project keeps attracting tourists, investors, and attention from all over the world.

Coming back to this part of downtown San Salvador after all these years honestly feels hard to explain. The whole area in front of the library used to be an outdoor mercado, and I remember coming here with my aunt in 2013. It was busy, chaotic, sketchy, rough to maneuver through, and at times a place tied to violence. During my last trip here my aunt told me that before the government’s major crackdown on the gangs, there were times severed heads of victims would be left in this very area as part of the gangs’ campaign of fear and control over the population. To imagine that happening in what is basically the symbolic center of the country, around the National Palace and some of the country’s most historic plazas and buildings, says a lot about how deep the violence and fear once ran here. Now, when you stand there today seeing families, kids, students, and tourists all over the place, it’s honestly wild to imagine it’s the same place as before.

Some photos from one of the traditional telares in San Sebastián. Elektra100 really made all the threads and colors pop in these photos. It was pretty awesome of them to invite me into the back to photograph them working on these blankets and textiles by hand.

San Sebastián is known all over the country for its woven hammocks, blankets, bed covers, and traditional textiles. A lot of these shops and family workshops have been doing this work for generations, and you can still hear the wooden looms working throughout different telares as you walk through the streets.
