Beautiful work in DL Alvarez‘s show up now at GGLA. Haunting drawings cobbled from 20th c yearbook that evoke nostalgia, togetherness, and abjection. https://guerrerogallery.com/dl-alvarez by @matiasviegener

Peaceful, productive walk-out for Gaza at CalArts today, a jarring contrast to the horrors at UCLA & Columbia, the other schools where I’ve spent chunks of my life. In 1985 I camped in a tent on UCLA’s campus protesting for divestment from South African apartheid: administrators never called in the police and a year later, the University of California divested from its South African holdings, the first major university in the USA to do so. I remember reading about Kent State as a child in New York, and I saw what happened when universities chose policing over dialogue. I did have the police called on me at AIDS protests in the 1990s, and it only bolstered my resolve to keep protesting until something changed. The emergency we all feel around the genocide in Gaza will only stop when things change. taken in California Institute of the Arts by @matiasviegener

It's Kathy Acker's 77th birthday today. Here's a 1975 photo from the first cover of The Childlike Life of the Black Tarantula under the pseudonym of The Black Tarantula, written as mail art in 1973. (This cover was designed by Jill Kroesen). Somewhere in there is the Kathy Acker I know least, the Kathy Acker who's in the process of discovering herself as a writer. 26 or so when this photo was taken, 50 when she died, 77 today. I wonder what she'd think about her long afterlife. by @matiasviegener
