THIS SUNDAY: CalArts Art School alum Erika Keck (@erikakeck), Creative Writing faculty Matias Viegener (@matiasviegener), and Aesthetics & Politics alum Ishani Chokshi will respond to Keck’s partial objects, now on view at The Reef (12th floor). Her paintings are not illustrative depictions of romance narratives or characters in a plot of breathless pursuit. Instead, her paintings provoke a more open ended question. Her recent selection of paintings center her relationship with George Pitts, her friend and mentor. The paintings give us permission to reenter the space between Erika and George. We came to Lauren Berlant’s Desire/Love to consider how to re-enter fantasy. For Berlant, Love is an outcome of fantasy. Fantasy (a form of desire) allows us survival from object attachments. Desire is an ambivalent energy organized by processes of attachment. In Erika Keck’s partial objects, paintings are not representational, but they are fantasies. If painting is a non-representational act, then what is painting? A scene of seduction, a proposition, pure color? You can RSVP at the link in our bio.

Huge thanks to all the folks who came out last night to the @tomoffinlandfoundation to see @matiasviegener, @curativeprojects and myself go off on everyone's favourite historical pervert and political radical, the Marquis de Sade. Big thanks to @jerri_allyn2 for working so hard to make this happen and for doing so much to hold together our ragtag group of sexy academics. This one was definitely 🔥🔥🔥 and definitely not recorded. You had to be there in the flesh.

The French Revolutionary Marquis de Sade’s groundbreaking act was to link sexual liberation with all other kinds of liberation—freedom from the state, the church, the family and all the moral codes of his day. His provocative, radical work is filled not just with sex but with violence and cruelty, intended especially to outrage the middle and upper class, and really almost all readers. It fits uncomfortably with our ideas of progressive or reactionary thought. So what can we do with him? Is he useful for gaining insight into the abuses of the US government today, controlling body autonomy? How do his ideas of gender identities comport with our own? Can we identify some roots of contemporary BDSM practices where participants “consent to play in negotiated scenes”? The presenters will also reference George Bataille, one of the most influential thinkers to have seriously considered the Marquis’s work, “ … if [Sade] had not existed he would have had to be invented…” 🔗in bio. Program coordinated by Jerri Allyn

LA's hottest intellectual roundtable will be at @tomoffinlandfoundation on April 30. This chat about the Marquis de Sade will have everything: a threesome of saucy academics, luxury jail sex, drama aristocrats, post-guillotine political reality, candles burnt at both ends, rich kid revolutionary ideas, a little Kathy Acker for spice, innocence lost and/or stolen, harsh critiques and loving praise, and, of course, sodomy. Maybe if you're lucky I'll dress inappropriately for my age and station. Or to be really naughty, maybe...a tie.
