Flatten (verb)
1. the process of making something flat or
reducing its height or thickness
2. the process of levelling something
3. to stop rising, falling, or changing so quickly, or
to make the rate of change slower

Pinboards are the og mood-boards, banal yet somehow vital expressions of taste/identity (use interchangeably) that are just as flat as the cartoon bodies that sit on them. But those animated bodies struggle for volume, buck expectation as they leap off the celluloid strip and talk back to their animators. Being flattened is a long-standing and ever-present demand made of us in tacit and explicit ways. It should be struggled with, highlighted through absurd contortions and sassy back chat (a la Bugs Bunny). It always takes pressure to squash a body, to flatten a container of meaning whether metal, flesh or celluloid. Pressed into a component part, ready for shipping. 📉🍳

The full swing of the Industrial Revolution in the early 1800’s saw materials handling techniques being employed on a widespread basis to facilitate the movement and storage of manufactured component parts as a recognised practise. Tote pans were and still are important items of equipment that can effectively store a wide range of modular parts and finished goods.⚙️⚙️⚙️ by @matildamoors

I wrote something about the insidious politics of the ‘clean girl’ look and the Brechtian possibilities of badly applied makeup for the “Blusher: Art, Makeup, Materiality” catalogue.

As a lil festive season treat here’s “Party As Form”, the Dilettante Army and PRAKSIS Presents joint special issue that I’ve been working on. Enjoy some holiday reading! Links in bio. 👀 💝

“Party” is an emulsion of feelings whipped up in the air between bodies in motion: intoxicating (even if technically sober), disorderly, fun. Time moves slower in revelry, or seems to pass in a moment of exaltation. But when a group of individuals fails to emulsify, hell is once again other people. The party as a one-night event is a microcosm of what we risk in coming together in community, in movements or political parties. Walking into a party means committing yourself to be a part of a project that exceeds you. @dilettantearmy 🔥

In my contribution, co-written with @saraclugage and @maikestatz we pick apart the architecture of vampire nightclubs to see what’s lurking inside. 🦇 
The issue comes out of the residency I did earlier this year at @praksisoslo and is jointly edited by PRAKSIS, Dilettante Army, and me (as guest editor) with images by @badtaste.biz ✨✨
