Last weekend we hosted an evening of commensality, exploring ways of sharing the table, eating and the stories behind food. This time, the focus was on bread.

20 breads, all shapes, all backgrounds. No cutlery, no other food, only bread, water, and wine. Breaking it together felt as a journey through layers of flavours and stories, each tied to a person, a memory.

Thank you to @liangjung_chen for supporting the evening with an edible installation and helping shape the space. Thank you @mark.otog for helping this come true. And thank you to everyone who attended. There will be more soon.

Went to see @olanalight show in Winchester this weekend & we realised it’s been 5 years (!!!) since the show For/In Itself - the very first time we’ve worked together. To celebrate this, I’ve finally collated a video capturing my first curatorial child (which was due in March 2020!). Was a such a great joy to work with the talented @matildamoors & @olanalight and pull off late nighters with the install dream team @hashtagstagg. Was very brave of the back-then Chalton Gallery to let us put this show together.
Very happy memories indeed & cin cin to more🔮

An incomplete collection of images from:
Blusher: Art, Makeup, Materiality
Leicester Gallery at De Montford University
Until 6 September

Makeup is often described as an art in glossy magazines and coffee table books. But how does art deal with makeup? The connections, between making-up and artmaking are apparent, but makeup’s connection with femininity problematises it, connecting it to artforms and aesthetics rich in colour and decoration which have historically been considered trivial and unworthy of serious academic interest. Beyond this, patriarchal societies have always had a complex relationship with makeup; ill at ease with its role in beautification, deception, and sexual allure, but appreciative of a ‘naturally’ made-up female face. Consequently, for long periods of history makeup has been a taboo in polite society.

Makeup is painterly and symbolic, with an ability to conceal and transform appearance. It is a joyful symbol of female emancipation but can also be a reminder of our subjugation to the dictates of a patriarchal culture. Inspired by the formal transformative qualities of makeup, alongside its creative qualities, role in ritual, and position in the commodification and codification of gender and race, Blusher unashamedly shines a light on this versatile medium, with work by artists that showcase makeup’s many meanings in a variety of media.

Ran out of space for tags!
