When the subject is ordinary, we have to work a bit more on the composition to get a photo that doesn't feel boring.
How many triangles are too many triangles? I'd say it depends on the nature of the subject and how we want it to appear.
Does anyone prefer the other shot?

the more layers we add, the more complex and difficult to handle the composition becomes. But I think it's worth the extra effort when well composed 🙂

the few the layers, the more minimal the composition. And the main question becomes what to exclude

and then of course... I always find lines that are supposed to be vertical in real life, but they're not for one reason or another e.g. a leaning rail or fence.
how much time wasted to decide which of those lines should be vertical? 😅

Want to make something look taller?

Get lower.

When you shoot from a low angle, the subject appears to rise above and beyond, exaggerating its height. It works on buildings, trees, statues, and even people. Anything vertical really.

A small change in camera position can significantly change how things feel in the frame.

sometimes taking just a couple of steps to the side is going to drastically change an image. I always find it wonderful 😄

You think you want details anywhere, because that's how our minds see the world. But that's not necessary to make a picture.
Most people try to save the shadows and end up losing the image.
Most often, light like this works better when you show what happens in the highlights and let the rest fall away.

These photos were taken at a Beltane celebration at @hill_of_uisneach
Not exactly what most people picture when they hear “street photography”.

But genres are useful only until they start limiting what we do.

I think "street photography" is one of the worst names ever used. It's not about streets and streets aren't necessary.

Surely not a photo everyone comes home with...

When we visit a place, we usually arrive with a picture already in mind.

The castle. The postcard view. The photograph we've seen a hundred times before.

I take that photo too and I enjoy it, but then (and before) I look around for what I personally notice and I try to make MY picture of the landmark.

And if the photo is not immediately screaming "castle" but requires a longer glance to understand "what am I looking at here?", it's usually a good sign.
